Hei, I stumbled upon this construction site on Eglington Ave just east of the Etobicoke Creek.
It is a pretty wide diameter hole with a smaller concrete dropshaft going a lot deeper. I did not dare go down the dropshaft, only down into the construction pit. I still nope out of stuff too early, that thing looked intense...
Any clue or ideas what this is used for? There is a fairly documented stormdrain nearby, but this thing looks too deep and the outfall is very close, just to be an access shaft for that. here was a pump running the whole time, probably to drain out ground water at the bottom. Is this an access to a sanitary sewer running under Etobicoke creek? The top part of that shaft sat next to the large hole and had two access on top, one looks like it's for the ladder and the other as sewage inflow.
The construction site looked a lot like the watermain construction downtown, which made me check it out in the first place. The watermain construction is awesome and has really amazing construction sites with incredibly deep shafts that had tiny railways going into the tunnels at the bottom. Didn't stomach to climb down there either though :-(
I've attached the three best pictures, which are still pretty bad in hindsight...
Really interested in the intended function of this thing.
Access shaft for sanitary sewer?
Maybe an interception directing the storm drain it into the regular sanitary sewer?
I have a few more pictures and a video I can share if someone is really interested.
