Anyone here know of a good undercoating / rust proofing for a car that i just re did some of the floor pans on? Its mostly clean metal, bits of surface rust, but all has been ground down and new metal patched in, i was thinking of using a roofing tar type of thing - but I'm not sure that could survive the salt? Thanks for all and any help.

I've tried roofing tar, I've tried the Canadian Tire aerosol spray on for truck bed liners/undercoating.

1) Use some damned gloves. Regardless of how you do it, you will end up with the shit all over your arms and hands. It stays on for days unless you use gas to wash it off. I use plastic bags on my arms and STILL get it all over my hands,

2) Some people claim these products trap in moisture. I can tell you that when I've used it on my Grand Am, it seemed to speed up the rate of decay rather than prevent it. I wouldn't use it again.

Hear this stuff is quite popular. I used it to coat the deck surface/cylinder walls in a Mercedes 300D I had to do a head gasket on. It sat outside for about 6 months until I got around to putting it back together. No rust at all, not even a thin film.

Use rockerguard, and don't buy a MK3 VW next time, they are made out of recycled 1980s Toyotas.

...the body panels, not the wiring. 1980s Toyotas still had good wiring.

best places up here take used motor oil, mix it with chainsaw oil, heat it up and spray, my 01 sunfire went to the wreckers in 2010 with no rust anywhere

But they're awesome! I'd actually like to buy a mk2 next, or a beetle. While I was trying to get to some good metal I started to wonder if they made them out of rusty metal from the factory. The wiring is surprisingly good, other than the fact I had weird misfire problems, cooling system had to be rewired, and if you slam a door the stereo cuts out.

I think if there's any oxidation at all, you'd be locking it in by coating it with anything. On a brand-new car, pre-oxidation, spray-on bed liner would probably work well. The first brand-new car I owned, a 1984 Chevy Cavalier, had aftermarket rustproofing on it when it was new, and it rusted to hell and went to the boneyard in 1997. My next brand-new car, a 2003 VW Beetle, had no rustproofing on it and has held up well.

YMMV, as always.
