Yup, I agree, all religion, no matter what good intentions are involved, is ultimately used as a tool to destroy people. I approve the kicking all religious people out of America.

That may violate the 1st Amendment.

I agree with your first statement, but I think European colonialism has had more of an impact than Islam in regards to holding down Middle Eastern states.

Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Kuwait were never colonized with European settlers or put under European mandates. Probably not a coincidence they weren't colonized and now happen to be the wealthiest Muslim majority-states.

I think the massive oil reserves also helps. Afghanistan was never colonized, and that place has sucked forever.

I've been avoiding commenting on this thread for a while, simply because I wanted to fully form what I was going to say before I said it.

I'm no friend of religion, that's for sure, but I think it's wrong to paint all Muslims with the same violent brush. Obviously, the vast majority of Muslims don't take their violent theology all that seriously, or we'd be at war with a billion people right now. Or more realistically, why aren't we at war with, say, Saudi Arabia? Money, obviously, but shouldn't religion trump money? The real reason is political. Radical imams may use religion as a rallying cry, but ultimately their ends are political, not religious. Even ISIS, if they truly want to establish a caliphate, has political ends. They want to establish a gov't. Granted, their clerics want that gov't to be religious-based, but that really isn't much different, than, say, Rick Santorum or Michelle Bachman who want a gov't based on Biblical values.

So yeah, they have a violent theology, but the Quran was written in what, 700-something? Find me anything that wasn't violent then. Muslims feel politically powerless and victimized by the West, and radical clerics are taking advantage of those feelings and turning them into action. It's not unlike the troubles in Northern Ireland. It was primarily a political struggle, but it was along sectarian lines, and used religion as a rallying point.

Am I defending Islam? No. All religions are capable of violence. Any time you have a belief system that claims to be infallible you have a recipe for disaster. The difference is Jews and Christians have the political and cultural power in the world. They don't need to resort to violence to achieve their ends, and they've also achieved a pretty comfortable position, so why mess with it?

And BTW, DevilC, at the Cleveland Islamic Center, men and women DO worship together. In contrast, a B'nai B'rith Youth Organization thing I worked a few years ago when I worked at a hotel didn't allow the boys and girls to eat together.

In the case of Gulf Countries, yes. Turkey, not applicable as they have exactly 0 oil.

Afghanistan was never colonized no, but it was firmly within British India's sphere of influence and was severely affected by British actions there on multiple occasions. Afghanistan has an absurd amount of mineral wealth that made it a relatively wealthy country in the 20th century, up until civil war instigated by the fuckin' commies.

Unrelated: I just read this very interesting story on CNN about a double-agent jihadist. He was a white trash dude from Denmark who converted to radical Islam and joined jihad. After he finally took some time to learn more about Islam than what he was taught by extreme interpreters in Yemen and what he read on the internet, he changed his mind and realized he's not such a fan of Islam, but never did he display any sort of remorse for the terrorist acts he was committing. he decided to become a double agent, fighting against terrorism and making millions of dollars via the CIA doing it.

he came to the conclusion that terrorism doesn't suck ... but Islam sure does! Seems like the perfect example of shitheads joining radical Islam because they want to shoot guns, feel powerful, and cause trouble but don't understand the BS indoctrination required to be a jihadist.

http://www.cnn.com...dex.html?hpt=wo_t4

that's my take on the story. i'd like to read other's interpretations.
