"A commemoration of mental health care gets underway today at the historic former London Asylum site on Highbury Avenue.

St. Joseph’s is inviting the public to explore the site as part of an event called “The Era of the Avenue,” marking the end of an era at the location dating back 145 years.

In November, patients at the current Regional Mental Health Care facility will be transferred to a new Mental Health Care Building at the Parkwood Institute in south London.

In addition to horse and carriage rides down the iconic Avenue of Trees, visitors can explore the Chapel of Hope, built in 1884 and the exterior remains of the first hospital built in 1903.

Museum London will be on hand presenting an extensive history exhibit in the recreation hall.

The event and tours, which are free of charge, run from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. today at the current Regional Mental Health Care site at 850 Highbury Avenue."

"Officials are billing the event as a chance for people to step into the past. Among the attractions:

Take a horse-drawn carriage ride down the iconic Avenue of Trees.
Visit inside the Chapel of Hope built around 1884.
Explore the remains of the first hospital.
Learn the history of the place in an exhibit from Museum London.
Celebrate the past with old-time music and vintage cars."

Sounds like a good time.

So basically, you can do the same stuff you could normally do.. Just with more people?

Anyone know what theyre gonna do with the empty hospital??
Hopefully it lasts a bit longer than Victoria did.

You weren't able to access the old exam building. Only look at it from outside the fence.

The exam building? Is that the one that's all boarded up? 'Cause from what I read, you don't get to go inside. "and the exterior remains of the first hospital built in 1903".

Unless it's a different building?

The boarded up building with the fence around it was not accessible for this event. We'll have to wait and see what the future holds for this site. The city has plans to make most of it into residential.

I wish I was still in London for college, can't believe I missed this! I went there last year and looked at the old exterior, there was an open window at the back, but I would've had to hop the fence to get at it, and that's when security saw me peeking at the building and got suspicious
