I am a huge cold war buff and I stumbled upon this gem while looking thru the LDB, and even though the structure is but a shell of its former self it was a location that I loved from the get go. the radar installation (or rather test site). the site was in operation during the coldest days of the cold war as a second line of defence against a bomber force coming over the arctic from the soviet union to attack. Of course when the threat of a attack with bombers became minimal in the early 1960's these sites were closed down, in the west in 1964 and in the east in 1965. this example was used until it was decommissioned in 1966.
when I was there I found numerous piles of rubble scattered on the site, more than likely those are just pits where they disposed of the now useless equipment. the site still has its early 1950's vintage fence in place, and the dishes and tower are in great shape for its age and the structural elements of the control structure are intact( being the steel beams, not the walls)
enjoy (sorry that some of the images are sideways, for some reason they are sideways here but not on my computer)
