Not my video I just found it on reddit.

Nobody else is going up there in a hurry. A highly athletic achievement, but definitely playing with fire there.

Incredible. After dabbling in serious rock climbing for several months, and having climbed stuff all my life, I took a trip to Arkansas with my girlfriend and there were 80 ft+ cliff sides that I decided to just climb around on, not intending to climb all the way up. After starting I ended up making my way higher and higher. Eventually I looked down and said "holy fuck i'm high!" and I came to the realization that no matter if I fell from 50 feet or 1000, I was still gonna be fucked up bad. So I just kept climbing, much to the chagrin of my girlfriend lol. Also never look down! And no matter what keep climbing!!

Nor should they. I hate to keep sounded like a party pooper, but it's going to happen. People are pushing the limits beyond crazy and it's not a matter of if, but when. Someone IS going to die pushing these limits. And that bothers me.

Fair point Raticus. While I suspect people have been dying doing these kinds of things forever, the point-of-view camera, the eye of social media and the desire to be a "hero" (to quote the GoPro's highly strategic name) are incredibly powerful cultural and commercial forces. I don't see that mammoth pendulum swinging back any time soon.

the guy has the brain the size of nuts, and nuts the size of a brain.

with my line of work. I am use to walking narrow iron beams at 600'+ but you would never catch me climb that high up an old cable, especially without knowing how it is anchor or what shape it is in.

I think you are exactly right. I don't see it swinging back for quiet a while. I admire the views and appreciate people who can do these things. But nothing like this is ever worth purposefully risking your life for. And that's what these guys are doing. Risking their lives for that moment of YouTube fame. But you are right. It's not going to stop, so I need to just stop bitching about it. It just bothers me that some will, and in fact have already, died doing this shit.

I'm always amazed by these types of videos. I would never do stuff like this. I have such poor balance and knew I would freak out and fall. Much respect.

NOPE.
Even the street view is crazy.

If you could get up there it would be a cool base jump though.

I do definitely understand the point Raticus is making. However, personally I find this kind of stuff highly fascinating. And for everyone staying alive isn't the highest priority. I can definitely see myself doing more and more this kind of stuff in the future. It is flirting with danger and death. But even basic UE (although to a much lesser extent) has that element in it, which at least for me makes it that much more interesting.

Inspired by the video that started this thread, I looked a little bit into this climbing thing. Some of you probably already know, but this kind of stuff goes by the names of Urban Climbing and Buildering.

Quite a nice documentary on the topic:

Hi there Toomas. While it may be true that not everyone is fascinated by staying alive, I for one would like to kinda, you know, live a little longer. So as for me, I'll just keep my aging butt off those kinds of towers and you can go have all the fun you want. I'll watch your videos.

Oh, btw, where should we send the memorial contributions?

One can trust the structural integrity of a bridge better than that of an abandoned structure.

I've never been afraid of heights, but I don't think I would trust the railings or catwalk, especially when parts of it were missing. Then walking on the winch thing on the top, NO WAY, I'm getting old, I can barely balance myself on a sidewalk, forget that.

Hi Toomas. I climb too. But "buildering" IMO is just too ugly a word to ever catch on! It's uncomfortably close in sound to "bewildering". I'm sure the person who coined it thought it was a clever fusion of "building" and "bouldering" but it's just not a winner. "Urban free climbing" is a mouthful, but that's got my vote
