"The Cottonwood Paper Mill (also known as Granite Paper Mill) is an abandoned stone structure located at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon in Cottonwood Heights, Utah. It was built in 1883 by the Deseret News under the direction of Henry Grow. Workers used paper making equipment brought in from the old Sugar House Paper Mill to grind logs from nearby canyons into pulp. Rags gathered from old clothes were also used to produce the pulp, which was then placed into molds and dried. During its operation, the mill could yield up to 5 tons of paper per day."

1. The Old Mill....

Alright so it seems like this place is pretty much the holy grail of Utah explorations...and like the real Holy Grail, there are a bunch of rumors surrounding it and because of those rumors I have some questions.

1. Has anyone actually been inside?
I've looked for POEs before but it seems like this place is sealed up tight like a tiger. And I don't mean been inside while it was open as a haunted house in the 80s (however, on second thought, I would like to hear what that was like) but I'm wondering if anyone's been in since it's been condemned.

2. What's up with the owner?
I looked through the archived threads on the site and one guy said he asked the owner if he could walk through for $300 and the owner said no! If someone offered me $300 just to walk through my abandoned building, I'd let them do it in a heartbeat. Also, I've emailed the owner twice now and I haven't received any emails back.

3. Is it dangerous to go inside?
I've heard a lot of people say that it's "structurally unsafe". What does that mean? To me, I just imagine someone stepping a foot in there and have the whole building come crashing down lol.

4. Anyone have any idea on the security?
Seems like there would be cameras or alarms if the owner is so concerned about people going inside, but at the same time I can't imagine someone taking the time to install all of those bells and whistles if practically all entrances are sealed up. I don't want to get inside through some sketchy time-consuming way and then have all of these silent alarms go off and within minutes of entering be surrounded by the whole entire Cottonwood Police Force.

What do you guys know about the old mill?

Very debatable, but in regards to the mill, yeah it is locked up and I have heard the owner is uptight. Can't say I've seen the inside myself, but I've never heard anything about it on the brim of crumbling to the ground.

haha for me it's the holy grail. It's one of those places that I dream about while I sleep. What would you consider the holy grail? Just curious.

the holy grail for me is the old Provo Jail. I love that place. The Murray Ore Processing Plant is cool too.

$300 would never cover his liability if someone got injured or killed, plus he probably doesn't want to deal with any bullshit-what if the person rips shit off, open it up for others, etc? Plus, he might have lots of money and $300 isn't worth anything.

I've been in there, but not for about 30 years

The owner is VERY, VERY, VERY uptight.

The building is structurally unsafe, and only allows the police to go in after trespassers.

BUT! These guys got to go in a few years ago and did a terrible job on reporting about it.

ALSO, speaking of Arrow Press. Jon Smith of X96 went in there last month and did a much better job of showing us what's inside.

Agreed! Such a great video, but the squatter situation was pretty disturbing. That person clearly has some severe psychological problems. I can't imagine what it must have been like for the people who used to work there to see their old offices in such a state.

The cottonwood Paper Mill looks eerie and amazing. Does anyone know if it is guarded, or if there are any security measures?

If I were the owner and someone offered me $300 to go inside, I'd probably assume they intended to do something shady, like getting injured and sue me for a lot more money. Unfortunately there are too many of those kind of people around, so I can't say I really blame the owner for being so uptight.

I've driven by that old building a million times and always wondered what it was. On another notes, I've always been curious about that old Arrow Press Square building.
