I was going through my picture files and found this building.

The scale and placement of the openings especially the three arches on the right side seem out of place...However that is part of the reason I like this building and plan to go back and try to visit the interior see what I find.

I'm sure there are other architectural oddities out there, modern or relics from the past...

Yep, that's a weird one alright. Any idea what that building's original vocation was? Might shed some light on the strange design.

Speaking of strange, this bizarre little residential puppy is located here in Montreal. Moshe Safdie designed "Habitat" for Montreal's Expo 67 world's fair. At the tender age of 26.

Here's a cool site if you want to read more about it:
http://cac.mcgill.ca/safdie/habitat/

Speaking of Safdie, he designed what has to be my favourite building in all of Canada. The National Gallery in Ottawa. A work of art in its own right. If you ever make it to Ottawa, you have to see it to fully appreciate it.

What's the thing hanging from the wall right from the left second floor* window? Looks a bit like a witch which flew right into the building.

To top it all off, this place was modular - built off-site and brought in- stacked like legos!

It's somekind of industrial or manufactural building, from around 1880-1915, The brick work, the double wooden door and the hoist riding on an H-beam don't lie.

Heres an odd use for a...get this - Church!

This is in the quaint little town of Paris, Ontario, right on the banks of the Grand River. A textile mill named "Wheeler Needle Works" occupies this former circa 1850 church.

In Maastricht alone are 10 "old" churches. Some are still in use as church but some not

One is in use as a disco, one is in use as a bicycle shed, one will soon become a hotel/appartement complex and for ones there are plans to make it into a ... crematorium / indoor graveyard ... *sigh*

At least those church structures have been given a second chance and have eluded the wrecking ball!

during my thesis, walking around Milan i saw this, which really left me with no words. How can you build covering the window of the building right next to the new one?

Top floor on the left, this was a manual lift to bring stuff up to the top floor. Ground level, right side, this was a "cochère" door (sorry, don't know the word in english). Those doors were actually opening to the back courtyard and enable to get a horse bogey in. Loft of older buildings on the East Coast had those (and lots still do in Montreal). "Cochère" door ("cocher" being the name in french for the person driving the horse bogey) were always aligned on the exterior side wall of the building, the side leaning towards another building as this was the safest point, structurally-speaking. Door on the left of ground level usually opened on stairs to go up and offices on the left. Pipes coming out of the wall in the middle, ground level, I suspect water connector. 2nd floor, middle, Electrical cables to connect to the street electrical poles.

Only 1/3 of the project was built. The whole concept of the project was to create a new type of low-cost housing. Pre-fab in industries and assembled on the site. All modules are the same, which reduce construction costs, and the concept was that even though people were living in close proximity, you could never see a window of your neighbourgs from your own window.

Moshe Shafdi still owns the top appartment of the complex and he rents it (almost for free) to young engineers that comes to Montreal to study. The only rule is that his unit needs to stay intact, with the original design.

All of this was part of Expo 67.
