"Covered in grease and boxed in wooden crates at gun shows and gun shops, these old rifles look less than impressive. When fed quality ammunition such as the 7.62x54r model 7N1 military sniper cartridge, it’s more than capable. The shooter in this video hit a target 944 yards away, with supplied iron sights, and that’s enough evidence to prove its worth!"

not to downplay the accuracy of the Mosin Nagant, but at nearly 1000yards without an optic I have to believe there's more than an imperceptible amount of luck coming into play. Don't know about you guys, but I can hardly see a target at ~1000yards without a scope (shit I hardly see one at 200yards with iron sites), and although I could likely get something in the ballpark, an iron-sight shot that hit on target would be luck and not skill (for me anyway).

Definitely a cool video tho

what a totally enviable "range" too !
90% of the shooting I do is at a 75ft indoor range - I'd sell my left nut to have access to a massive open canyon like that

you can see the bullet contrail at about 2:17 that's quite an arch

you can do the same thing with an 03 Springfield at 1000yds all day long

That is a LOT of drop to compensate for too.
Lots of calculations to make there.
Methinks the shooter has taken that shot before.
I'd have to sit and do some math before taking that shot with my R700 or any other sighted-in rifle I have.

I have trouble thinking that this guy took a boxed nagant, whipped it out and popped a 1000 yarder. However, having been a competitive shooter for years, and having watched a ton of 1000 yard matches, I have no trouble believing it can be done, since I've seen it done. If you know your weapon, round and the ballistics tables for the round, you can make the rough calculations in your head pretty quick. Also, 54R is a very predictable cartridge. Good shooter on the trigger = perfectly possible.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

ooops hit modify instead of quote sorry, no damage done

indeed it is a lot of drop, the combat sights are marked for 800 meters, now add some wind and some mirage (we have mirage so bad on our 500yd range the target looks like its moving)

that Mosin round is a bit slower than a 30.06 (military load) I just thought the vapor trail was awesome, suppose that's a real size silhouette? looks pretty large to me

You're spot on.
It's @ the mark you said.

I just find shooting elevation to be difficult.
Hitting the target, at that distance/elevation, the 1st time, with an unfamiliar rifle ...
I guess if the guy is a pro/old-timer and has the heuristics to do the mental math on where to shoot ...
I have been a rifleman since I was 10 and I doubt I'd know the dope on a Moisn @ that range with a drop-off like that to get it on paper the 1st shot.

that pic is our local club, farthest targets 500 yds we get lots of mirage semi desert conditions you cant see it in the pic but the left 500 yd range has a life size turkey silhouette on a pendulum its lots of fun

wind aint bad at 500 with the .308, but with the AR Im lucky to hit 50% note windsocks

you guys are so lucky to have sweet ranges like that. My local range is 25yd indoor that allows for pistol calibers and shotguns only. It's only 10 minutes from home though, which in Toronto is incredibly rare. It's like a hidden gem that almost nobody knows about - I refuse to even tell most people about it in fear of the membership numbers swelling too much.

There are longer range outdoor ones, but they're at least 1.5hrs drive outside the city and only go to 300yds. There are opportunities to shoot 1000yds at a somewhat nearby military base, but those chances are few, far between and consume the better part of a day with travel time.

out here some guys spend as much on their rifles as I do on my truck

we got all sorts of exotic calibers as well as your garden variety 338.Lapuas, 6.5 and a half mm somebody uncle whitworth or something..they don't use spotting scopes at 400 and 500yds they use video cameras eg. some serious shooters out here they bust standard clay pigeons at 500yds if theres a draw they use 2.5" mini clays to break the tie

I got rid of my wildcats and all but 1 belted mag, .220 swifts and reloading stuff like that (trying to keep 7.62x51 and 5.56x45 as a standard )but I aint given up my .444 Marlin yet it kills boar pigs at 200yds like they were clubbed

Love me some long range shooting! I have been involved in a decent bit of long range shooting comps, however my main game is 3 Gun. I am hoping to shoot more this next year. I bought a 6.5 Creedmor barrel and am hoping to have it installed on my 700 shortly.
