One of my all-time favorites is The Count of Monte Cristo. I first read it in high school, and I recently upgraded my high school paperback for a hardcover. I read it about once every 18 months or so.

WTF indeed.

Les Miserables. I read it in 10th grade and for the six weeks it took me to read, I lived it.

-Animal Farm

That book was probably the worst book I have ever read. But then it was written to look like a government so I can't really argue my case.

Although I have lots and lots of favourite books I'm lucky enough that my all time favourite is easy to figure out.

Thomas Pynchon - Gravity's Rainbow

A long, sometimes confusing, often funny, surprisingly profound read. Pynchon is a little known genius who has influenced scores of writers, including...

Matt Ruff - Sewer, Gas and Electric

UE, humour, philosophy and all sorts of other stuff all rolled into one hell of a sci-fi.

Those two pretty much crown my fiction list, but boy is that a long list. As for non fiction that's harder to quanify. The one that's made the biggest difference in my understanding and outlook on the world and life recently is...

Robert Moore - King, Warrior, Magician, Lover

A Jungian psychology book about the mature masculine archetypes and how to access them.

And I'll stop now. Don't get the guy who spent 6 years studying literature and philosophy started...

One of my all-time favorite books. I think it's out-of-print though.

Ulysses-- James Joyce ( dont pretend to understand all of it)
V-----Thomas Pynchon ( same deal as above)
Slapstick--Kurt Vonegut (Hi Ho)
Waterland--Graham Swift
Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy --Douglas Adams(read the set at least 3 times)

There's far too many 'contemporary' titles to list, but as far as classics:
The Catcher in the Rye
Brave New World
The Great Gatsby
MacBeth

Hey, awesome book, had a huge influence on me too ! You're the first person I've EVER come across who knows this book.

PS: you left out Douglas Gillette as co-author.

My all-time favorite is The Once and Future King by T. H. White. It's the classic King Arthur legend with a lot of interesting twists. it follows Arthur from a very young age to the end of his life. It's one of the very few books I've read that has made me laugh out loud and choke up in the same story. I recommend it to everyone.
