| | | I've done quite a bit of mine exploring. Here's my 2 centavos worth. If you have not been mine exploring before, AND this is a vertical shaft, AND there are no good ladders, then I strongly suggest that you stay out of it for the time being. Put it on your list of explores for when you are more experienced with vertical. Vertical exploring is an order of magnitude more difficult than horizontal exploring. At a minimum you should have some sort of head protection. Skateboard helmet, bike helmet, hard hat with a chin strap, or a true climbing helmet. I wouldn't head underground without at least 3 light sources, two of which are attached to the helmet. You don't want to be trying to hold your flashlight in your mouth as you use both hands to climb out. If the mine requires rope, then don't even think of trying it without training up in rappelling, ascending, and rigging a safe anchor. Gas detectors are a great idea, but they are quite expensive to buy and maintain. Depending on the are where the mine is found, it may have good air or it could be deadly. I would suggest trying to meet up with some experienced explorers to learn the basics. Good judgement is really important underground. Abby Normal
