Okay, so this was my first time getting caught. I was checking out a scrap yard, and was caught hiding under a pile of cars by one of the workers.

They asked me for my name, who I was taking pictures for, where I came from, and what I was doing there. Then, they escorted me off the property, and followed me in their trucks until they were satisfied I was gone. They weren't satisfied until I was in my car and pulling out of my parking space.

One of the workers drove around the back of my car, and radioed something in. I suspect it was my license plate number.

How, exactly, boned am I? Should I prepare for a visit from the cops?

I highly doubt it. They probably just wrote down your plate in case they see your car back there again. I definitely wouldn't go back in that car! But I doubt you'll hear from the cops. If they wanted the cops involved, they would have called them when they found you (and probably attempted to get you to stay until they arrived).

I just got caught for the first time ever last week too. Property owner got a pic of my license plate but i managed to talk my way out of her calling the cops, though she was completely dumbfounded as to why someone actually WANT to take pictures of a grain mill. Turns out all the graffiti on it was pretty recent though.

But in your case if you don't hear anything in the next week then you're fine. Be sure to post pics when the statute of limitations passes!

Actually, it turns out these guys were a bit more serious than the ones you two ran into. I got home, and just as I was starting to relax, a deputy showed up at my door. He took my personal information, and asked some questions. I think he got all the information he wanted, so I don't think he'll be coming back, but I can't go back to that location either.

After all, if the owners start throwing around phrases such as "prosecution" and "industrial espionage," then the risk is way too high for my liking. Still, I'm in no legal trouble, so that's good.

Industrial espionage -- in a scrapyard?

But, in the eyes of society, you are the one in the wrong, not the one wronged, trespasser. Now go explore someplace else ASAP, not getting caught.

Yeah, apparently the recycling center has "state of the art" equipment. I don't know what secrets I could possibly steal, but apparently they believe they have some. If they're that concerned, I won't be going back there- I do NOT need the risk.

Think ive had my plate numbers written down by like two people already, one even tried to block me in and I was like na f that.Nothing came from either.I couldn't see the cops caring enough either, prob just came to get info but sure they dont really have enough to get a trespass without the cop seeing you on the property. But got the information if the owner wanted to put restraining order or something on you, even come back with a ticket I don't think too hard to fight it.

The two scrapyards in my city both have lots of cameras and fencing, I think scrapyards tend to have a lot of problems with people taking that valuable metal. But since they weren't actually moving forward with prosecution and just threatening hopefully you're in the clear. That's a super scary experience though, glad you're back safe!

By the way, one other question:

The police officer said he needed my information for some paperwork down at the station, but that I hadn't technically done anything wrong, and that it wouldn't go on my public record.

Does this mean that this whole mess won't show up on background checks by universities and employers?

Well I just wrote a huge reply then realized you weren't from Ontario. -.- But it seems Wisconsin has the same deal - the only thing that shows up is arrest history, prosecution info, and sentences [1]. But if it does pop up and the conviction doesn't have a connection with the job you're applying for you can take them to court for discrimination [2].

It admittedly is weird that he needed to take your information back, but if you don't hear anything back soon I'd say you're probably fine.

No you been to be convected of a crime for anything to show on your record which would involve going to court with lawyer and etc. Tickets also go on your record but you would know if you got a ticket. Im sure he took the info that if you went back to the place again trespassing or they found evidence of you committing another crime while on that property the officer has you name and all that so make it easier to track you down. Thats what it sounds like to me but im not a lawyer lol

This is just a guess, but I'd bet they're having you trespassed from the property (not like a trespassing charge, just making it official that you don't belong there). They're trying to ensure you don't come back.

Unless you're there at the same time as the police they call, or were stealing/vandalizing/other escalating charges, you're fine. We were chased down by security after we left a hotel in Detroit. He took my plate number. I pulled up close behind my friend's car so they couldn't take his (he's local) He honked his horn a few times and made angry gestures at me. I assume he eventually got it because he drove away. Nothing's ever happened from that.

It will not be on your public record, but it will be retained in the database, so if the police ever run your name for something else (even a traffic stop), they can see that you were cited for this violation.

The police in my area always do this. The inbred next door neighbor at my cabin likes to call the cops on us for no reason. They always take my name, phone number, address etc. Same happened when I called the police after my car was broken into. It's likely just if they need to follow up with you for some reason.

You should be fine just be careful looking around next time. I'd stay away from the scrap yard for sure since coming back is ignoring their demand for you to stay away and they can press charges.

The police will keep your info so if you are found again but somewhere else they might see you come back as doing this sort of thing before. In less populated places you have a better chance of telling them what you're doing (Picture taking, I like to add exploring history) they sometimes won't bother to write it down again and just tell you to scram.

Now I don't know about your area but where I am sometimes if a building is under city/state ownership you can sometimes ask the police if you can explore and you explain why and they'll sometimes give you a free pass. If not then well, don't get caught.

Well, I haven't heard back from them in about a month, so it looks like I'm well in the clear. I'll be a bit more careful in the future, and I'll have to stay away from that location for a while, but I think everything's good now.

Honestly, I wouldn't ever go back to that location again. They have your license plate, they know what you look like. If you get caught again, definite jail time. But don't let this hiccup deter your exploring. If you don't have a close call, then you aren't doing it right.

I've had the FBI take down my name (I was apparently looking overly suspicious while in the general vicinity of the RNC protest back in 2008) and I passed a background check for a ground crew job at MSP airport a few months after. No arrest generally means no worries, but I'd say it's a fair plan to to play it safe at least for a while.
