Tips on solo travel. Locations to visit. Places to start

I'm a 20 year old male looking to do some travelling, I'll be going alone and I need to start planning where I'll be heading. Does anyone have any good places to kick it off? Any "must see" locations? There's so much to see and I want to make the most of this.

Best of luck with your trip!

But people on here are unlikely to hand you locations.

this is a trust based site, being that your new, i doubt that some are willing to hand you 'must see' locations, best thing i could suggest is research where your going and see if you find anything that interest you, or just straight walk around. have a fun trip though

I have travelled across the Atlantic to the States on my own twice now.

The best thing to do is try and make some sort of contact in various locations you plan on staying. About half of my time has been spent staying with or meeting up with people I got in contact with through forums/facebook and the other half I spent on my own, doing what I wanted.

It's the best, most rewarding but equally most daunting thing I have ever done.

How long are you travelling for? And are you planning on driving, or flying?

Personally I think backpacking style travelling is really great because you get to meet so many people from all over the world.

I hear Russia is nice right now. Same with Antarctica. Just an idea.

Don't listen to Cowboy. The abandoned buildings in Antarctica aren't that great. In fact hardly anyone has bothered to create location database entries for them.

Click Events in the left sidebar. They happen in towns that have active explorer communities and/or good sites. Go hang out there, look around, learn to do online research, and see what you can make happen.

I was hoping to go for a few months maybe more. Thinking of starting somewhere in England. I'll be flying and backpacking. I really want to see the catacombs in Paris.

While England sounds like a awesome adventure I think North America would give you far more bang for your travel buck. So much to see here.

Do you want above ground places or below ground ones or both?

I was interested in experiencing different cultures so I kind of wanted to get out of North America, but I'm still deciding. Maybe it is better to stay closer to home for my first trip. Well like I said I'm really interested in the catacombs. So I like above and underground

Places where you can experience different cultures within the US (in order of coolness and uniqueness as judged by DJ Craig):

New Orleans, New York City, New Jersey, San Francisco, Asheville, Boulder, Austin, Portland, Detroit, Minneapolis, Los Vegas, Atlanta.

Some of those places seem a little sketchy for solo travel but I'll definitely look into them. I've always wanted to see Alcatraz. Old subway tunnels in New York sure would be cool.

And I was thinking I guess it's a higher risk factor trespassing in another country? Since your not a citizen of that place police might give you a hard time

Different areas (countries, etc) have different laws regarding this hobby, best to look up the places you want to go to see what the deal is. The other advice on going solo that I can give is be safe, don't take risks that you might take with other people around, there is nobody there to help if you f it up.
