Wanting to visit Canada

So I'm from California but I'm interested in visiting some of your mines up there. I have heard some rumors tho about getting up there. Is it true that if I have a DUI from the USA I can't enter there? Just wondering if you have any insights on that.

Thank you

Found this... As a general rule, Canada does not allow persons with DUI's to enter their country, although travelers who require in-depth information regarding the process of applying for a waiver or other admissibility questions can reach the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) during regular business hours, Monday to Friday (08:00 - 16:00 local time, except holidays) by calling either (506)636-5064 or (204)983-3500.

Pretty sure you'd need to get a Pardon if you wanted to enter Canada if you have a DUI conviction... Although UER Isn't the first place I'd go to ask for legal advice.

Yeah, you're probably gonna need to pardon that. A DUI is fairly serious up here and if you were driving, you'd almost certainly get turned away.

Based on my extensive research on the topic, i.e. having binge watched Border Security, I concur with everyone above.

It's definitely a sticky situation.

We hired someone from Michigan for some temporary contract work a couple years ago, he had a DUI on his record and he was refused at the border when he first tried to cross. If you contact border authorities ahead of times, and your record is good otherwise, you can get an authorisation to cross once or twice. After that, you will need to meet the requirements for a "pardon" before all crossing restrictions are lifted. In our case, we had to fill out a bunch of paperwork to justify that we needed him to cross over about a half dozen more time after his "free pass" ran out.

Interesting, I thought it was just drug/trafficking convictions that were not allowed in. People with felony convictions can get in to o_0. I'd say look into it, you don't want them to say no if you just try to cross.

Yeah it's best to be sure just in case cause with border officers, it's always up to their discretion. They can turn you around for literally no reason at all if they really want to, so it's best to have your record as clean as possible when they bring it up.

Yeah this isn't a legal forum but luckily I just passed a course in college on Canadian immigration law. If you have a DUI conviction, you are in admissible on the grounds of criminality. You have to wait 10 years to apply to be "rehabilitated" in order to get in. Sucks but that's what happens. Ya booze, ya lose!

To the OP:

Any criminal conviction in the US that translates to a serious crime if it had been committed in Canada can make you inaccessible. Regardless of criminal activity record, you will need a valid passport to enter Canada at a land crossing. Sometimes if you are just a casual visitor (camping, vacation, ect) and have all your plans set in stone then you can sneak past the system. The border security agent at the kiosk at the land crossing will NOT see a criminal record when scanning your passport. If you are sent to secondary then they absolutely will find your criminal activity record and be sent back to the US. If you travel by air, you will more easily get caught, but not for sure.

It works about the same way to cross into the US as a Canadian Citizen. I crossed for over 10 years while I had a criminal activity record. Did not even know I was not admissible to the US, got through every time until I was sent into secondary in Detroit. I was refused entry, and flagged, I had to get a pardon (that took years) and now I can enter without incident.
