Abandoned Mines near Oatman, Arizona

A few months ago I was heading to the mining town of Oatman when I saw a random Christmas tree on the side of a hill, so I stopped to investigate.

There were a couple of vertical mine shafts nearby.

Standing at the top of the hill, I saw mine tailings in the distance, so I took off on foot to see if I might find a horizontal mine to explore.

I found a discarded couch in the middle of nowhere.

And the remains of some mining structures.

Several more vertical mine shafts

A dire warning:

And finally a couple of horizontal mines.

It was an amazing experience, especially because it was unplanned. Feel free to check out my blog for more pics and the rest of the story:

Thanks!

Jim

Nice shots.

And looking up the laws that the sign alludes to, it looks like Arizona doesn't screw around when it comes to mines.

It would seem that Nevada used rebar to erect fences around abandoned mine shafts, which is weird.

Little funny from a guy who has seen a shitpot of those signs. It says tampering with the SIGN is a felony, not entering the mine. Read it carefully. 90% are worded that way, and it got my ass off the hook once. It matters here because New Mexico has some very interesting free range and down fence laws regarding what is and isn't trespass.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.
