Abandoned? Vacant? Demo? Does it really Matter?

In recent months I have been noting a lot of houses that look pretty much abandoned, or vacated, or awaiting some kind of rezoning so that the homes can be demo'd for new multi unit dwellings or whatever the cities have planned for the property and land. So last night I decided to take a drive with my gear and see what the deal was with these places.

It turned out that 4 out of the 6 houses I checked on were, for lack of a better term, abandoned. Now I know we could go on and on about the meaning of that word and what a truly abandoned house is vs a vacant house vs a house awaiting demo - I get enough of that shit elsewhere, so I hope the crowd here knows that it really doesn't matter at the end of the day and that we, as a group collectively enjoy going into these places to explore and admire and maybe take some photos. Sometimes we even share those pics here on UER!

Anyway, I got started last night at 5:30pm and wrapped up around 9:30pm when it was too dark to see anything in the last house.

I thought I would share as I feel like the scenes here might be new to many, I don't recall seeing much, or anything, from the homes I checked out last night.

I hope you like the set, all pics are just straight out of camera and rezised - no fancy shit, just dumpy old pics from crappy old houses...or crappy pics of dumpy old houses, if you like.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume you're referring to Facebook.

If you post photos of an immaculate house with no dust and lots of possessions, "you committed a B&E. they must have been getting groceries"

If you post a historic location open to the public, people complain "this isn't abandoned".

Should you post photos of an old ghost town, where the main industry disappeared many years ago, and now only a handful of people reside there, you'll receive comments such as "People live here. It's not abandoned."

Even if there's no door and you can walk right in, people will complain about no dust on a table. They'll argue amongst themselves that you committed a B&E because someone must live there, yet all the other places posted aren't B&E's.

Someone can not have lived in the house for 30 years but should the power be on, the great debate begins that someone owns it so it's not abandoned.

You have to look at FB as being the "armchair mom and dad" explorer type social media where people enjoy looking at the hobby, but don't truly understand the hobby. I'm sure you're also well acquainted with the daily requests for locations to do model and wedding shoots, real estate agent requests, paranormal researchers, aspiring taggers.

Facebook is good for exposure but little else - you can explain one week that the term 'abandoned' is an umbrella terminology that people in the hobby generally understand is a catch-all term, and the next week someone will ignite the 'vacant' vs 'abandoned' debate all over.

When we're on the road, and someone says check out that abandoned house over there - it's understood that it's not in use, it's been left behind, and there's no need to delve into "oh no John, that's not abandoned it's vacant" or "John, that's actually seasonally used - notice the summer furniture".

I digress - the TL/DR is "Only explorers truly get it. Facebook mom and dads never will." Been there, done it, and some days would just like to tell them all to piss off with the arguing.

And may God be with you as well.

That's the way to do it!
I've done a few similar spontaneous sunset drives. Supper's cleaned up, dishes are done, and there's still an hour or two of light left. Time for discovery!

Storytrail beat me to the punch on exactly the same comment: #5 and #11. And I'm not bandwagon jumping. #5 has the most interesting (and oldest) leftovers and #11 has the most interesting angle and colour theme of the entire set.

And what's with #4?? Man, even when you're inner city and not traipsing through raccoon shit, the buggers are still haunting you somehow.

Good stuff!

Judging by the artifacts as well as the instruments some real artsy/musical people were there. Almost feels like they were Parisian apartments for some reason. ('Some reason' being spiral staircase)

Your picture coming down the stairs has so much more in it, the one you took from the front door #11 was awesome.

1.

Is your #12 picture this ladder?

2.

Up in the attic (3rd floor) portion of the house.

3.

This home was built around 1858, love the exterior look.

I've been shunning houses. I'll reconsider that.

I hope these homes aren't being demoed.

As they're pretty darn cool.

Especially with the one that has a door to Narnia.
