Creative Photography Meets Urban Exploring

Hello hello!

My name is Victoria, I am new to the forum and thought I'd start a unique little thread!

I'm interested to know who else enjoys taking creative photos while out urban exploring? By this, I mean trying out new lighting techniques, taking self-portraits or light painting... More than just snapping still photos of urban decay.

I've been urban exploring for awhile now and I often find myself revisiting some locations once I am familiar with their vibe. I'll scope out some interesting areas and naturally come up with shoot ideas for the future. I'll usually bring a friend and together we make my visions come to life!

For example, I've taken fire breathing photos in a storm drain (I know what you're thinking and yes this was VERY dangerous. I would not recommend anyone to do this. Taking photos of someone spitting kerosene onto a torch in an enclosed area with barely any oxygen was very stupid but the photos were very worth it), car photos in front of abandoned industrial buildings and light painting, multiple exposures, etc.

Here are some of my photos and my techniques explained for you to try it out yourself if you are interested!

Taken 1km inside a storm drain, using a Nikon D800 and a 14-24mm on a tripod and an SB-910 flash mounted on the hotshoe, pointing up towards the ceiling of the drain. During the exposure, the torch was in the way. This photo was actually taken by accident but the fire came out adding such a cool feel to this photo! Win!

Exposure Info: f/22 - 10s on a tripod (very tricky with the water coming through)

Taken inside the same storm drain with a Nikon D800 and a 14-24mm lens, quicker shutter speed to catch the fire. Flash fired as well, bouncing off the ceiling.

Exposure Info: f/5.6 - 1/1000s hand-held

Taken in the same storm drain with a Nikon D800 and a 14-24mm lens, flash was on, pointed at the wall behind me to light up the subject. Kerosene was put around the circle and lit on fire.

Exposure Info: f/14 - 1/1.3s

Taken with a Canon 5D Mark II and a 24-105mm lens in a dangerously moldy motel in Oakville, ON. Ran in and out as fast as I could.

Exposure Info: f/5.6 - 1/30s.

Taken at the infamous Camp 30 in Bowmanville with a Canon 5D Mark II on a tripod.

Exposure Info: f/8 - 10s with flash mounted on hotshoe, fired once.

Taken outside of the Symes Road Incinerator in Toronto, ON using a Nikon D810 and a 14-24mm and finger lights bought from Dollarama to create the light painting. A flashlight lit up the incinerator for a couple seconds during the exposure to create the eerie effect.

Exposure Info not available.

Taken with a Nikon D600 using a 24-70mm, using built-in multiple exposure mode on a tripod.

Exposure Info: f/5.6 - 1/2s each shot.

Taken with a Nikon D600 + 14-24mm lens on a tripod using built-in multiple exposure mode, this one was taken outside an abandoned asylum in Drummondville, QC.

Taken with a Nikon D600 + 14-24mm lens on a tripod using built-in multiple exposure mode. Same Asylum called Asile Ste-Clotilde-de-Horton.

*****************************************************************************

Let me know if you need some tips, I'd be happy to help or shoot with any locals who are interested in collaborating! I have lots of experience with this and I always look to share and merge talents with others who have the same interests.

And a few last ones for ya... Here's one of me in front of my car... This one was taken outside the abandoned Grand Trunk Railway in Stratford., ON. I took it myself using a tripod, was kinda scared to get a flat tire but whatever, the photo was worth it:

I get this question a lot! I work for Nikon ;) I used to own a Canon 5D Mark II... Sold it since I started working here.

My job is to learn each camera inside and out in order to help/support and inspire consumers.

Cheers!

Very Awesome Wong Guy! I love the frozen waterfall shots. I know how painful it is to be creative in the winter time... Totally worth it though. Also I see you're a fan of fire! I can't wait to work on more fire projects

I love winter.. less people.. things are frozen ( waterfall / creek / flooded basements ) making things a bit more accessible. ( minus the footprints it leaves behind )

Yea.. apparently now I look at my pics.. it seems like I"m kinda pyro. lol.
I also notice you drive a Mazda 6 as well although newer.

Since you work for Nikon.. I"m going to ask when is the next free sensor cleaning and location? hahaha.. I got my sensor cleaned last year from nikon techs for free at Bell Arte in Hamilton. ( Think I missed this year at Bell Arte )

Aside from a few downfalls such as obviously freezing and camera lenses fogging up (and risking permanently damaging sensors by creating moisture damage) I love winter photography.

Great photo! I was going to do one myself. Mine's a Mazda 3 2014. I love it! It would actually be easier to shoot than yours because it's white too! I have yet to try this, been meaning to. Grey would be the best colour with the least reflection though.

Sensor cleanings aren't free unfortunately and I don't know how to do them, only authorized people can... It's a delicate process and the camera must be plugged into our database and be completely spotless to complete. Not something I'd be able to do on the spot, but well worth the money. If you ever need service done you can ask me for some help though!

Cheers!

Some nice stuff here! First, welcome to the forum. Second, its nice to actually see guy "models" in shots instead of women. I quite like the fire breathing as an x of mine did that, and I always thought it was fun. And lastly, sweet job!

Thank you! I like to spice things up a little... I find sexualizing girls in shoots gets really repetitive and old. That happens to be an ex of mine in the photo as well! Haha, thanks for the warm welcome!

Yeah that's my local drain, since they bolted up the other one at least. Been to any other in Mississauga? There's some other good ones like that in the area and a bit south of there.

Here are some more I took of myself in Alderwood Collegiate Institute before it was demolished. I loooooooooved this location. The auditorium was absolutely amazing! I took these using a Nikon D800 and a 14-24mm lens, tripod, flash and some were taken using multiple exposure techniques. While I was taking them, some little young punks ran by and threw a FULL SIZED brick right at my camera (missed it by around a meter) but my heart dropped, I grabbed all my gear and left. You never know what you'll find in abandoned places, always make sure you travel with a friend.

Didn't know there was another one! This drain is so much fun.

I took a few more in here, here's one of many:

Haven't been in awhile though! Sucks when it rains, you have to wait a few days. It's been raining quite a bit lately.
