| | | I really really hate to be the person sticking up for selfie sticks, but hear me out. There is a huge stigma against them because of all the frat daddies that use them in museums or stop traffic to grab cool shots. But selfie sticks are actually pretty versatile and offer a lot when you don't feel like lugging your camera around. I only use my stick in conjunction with my GoPro which is nice because I don't currently own a wide angle lens. Whenever I travel, I'm by myself ninety percent of the time, so it is nice to get pictures of myself in some of the places I visit. And when I'm hiking or in a rush, I normally don't carry my DSLR around. Having the camera on a stick also provides a lot of manipulation of camera angles without having to deal with setting up a camera and tripod. Some of my favorite pictures I simply could not have taken with a camera and tripod. So make fun of the selfie stick all you want, but I'm going to keep using it. Mostly because it is lightweight, convenient, and easily manipulated. But to all those assholes using them to get selfies with the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, you are an asshole and give the rest of us a bad name. Here are a couple pictures captured with a selfie stick: 1. Fucking Kids Fucking Kids by Anomalicious, on Flickr The above picture was taken in the Eagle Cap Wilderness of Oregon when a lost kid wandered into my campsite. It kept following me around, but when I decided to try and get a picture with him, he started to run away. So in order to get this picture I ended up running full speed bent over holding the selfie stick in front of me. Absolutely no way this moment is captured with a conventional camera and setup. 2. Cooling Tower Cooling Tower by Anomalicious, on Flickr This picture was taken inside the cooling tower of a nuclear power plant. I had to jump a fence to get here and did not want to lug my camera bag with me since I did not plan to stay long. So I brought the stick and GoPro and set a self timer while I wandered around underneath it. Again, not the easiest angle and set up to shoot when you are alone. It is still a narcissitic tool, I'll admit that. But so are a lot of the portraits we take of ourselves in places. This just makes it easier and takes less skill. And in public it is more invasive if you use it like an asshole. Apologies for having to defend this monstrosity.
