So I've heard some rumours that there is a system of underground tunnels beneath downtown Guelph. Has anyone ever explored these / can confirm if they even exist?

Thanks.

There are some tunnel openings in the hotel across the road from the Basilica downtown which supposedly run up towards the church. I've seen the openings personally. From the famous bootleg days of our famous brewery in town I suppose. There is one tunnel on the church property which I have explored but was sealed off a few years back when sewer and grading work was done extensively on the property. If I learn more I will gladly share here.

Cheers!

Will a moderator please take this thread down. Discussing entry points and specific locations in public is not good...

I think I'll leave it for now unless the OP or anyone else has a major concern about the nature of the content. Although a specific location was named, I feel it's sufficiently vague (ie: no mention of the name of this hotel or where in the basement the entrances are) that it's not going to cause any harm. Anyone looking to explore said tunnels would still need to do a decent bit of research, and infiltrate/explore the basement in an active business to find them, if they even still exist. That's fair game in my books...

Based on Bach565's description I found the location on Google Earth in about 30 seconds and called the hotel he was referring to. I spoke with the manager and he confirmed that there were indeed tunnels that led to the hotel from the brewery "up the hill". I have no idea what that meant but I'm from Texas...

I asked if they were still there or if the hotel still had access to them and he said that they had been filled in "a long time ago" but didnt know when, nor are there any remnants of their termination at the hotel currently.

Now, on the other side of things, I have no idea where this brewery is that has been referenced but if you are interested in finding any tunnels that may still exist I would start there. Presumably the building no longer exists however you could contact the owner of whatever modern building sits atop the site and ask them.

You could also contact the Guelph Historical Society:

Also you could contact the Wellington County Land Registry Office:

If you do happen to locate these things make sure to take lots of pictures and have a good story! Cant wait to see the results!

Then can you at least change this to a non-public thread?

Seeing as how the hotel confirmed these tunnels have been filled in I really don't see any reason to make it private. There may or may not still be tunnels somewhere within the city of Guelph...most locals would know of their supposed existence, but I believe they're all gone, and anything left are probably small isolated sections, likely accessed from private property. There's absolutely nothing in here that I would consider "entry details". More like "clues" and "starting points for future investigation", but those are hardly against the rules. Heck, that's half the fun of exploring, to me anyway.

That being said, if I'm missing something and you feel this truly needs to be kept under lock and key, shoot me a PM with that info and I'll gladly change it's status if warranted.

also, Kudos the Peptic Ulcer for that research....I absolutely love that someone in Texas is spending time and energy helping solve riddles in Ontario. Very enterprising, and great work

I had all but forgotten this thread and had moved on to bigger and better things until it resurfaced and piqued my interest again. The mystery is NOT really over. Even a basic search of "Guelph tunnels" yielded some interesting results. To save your fingers a bit of work here are some of the more interesting results.

1.An interesting story of the Mob in Guelph and the tunnels they built
http://morgeti.blo...ories-tunnels.html

2. An actual exploration of some of the tunnels in Guelph (photos included).
http://culturemap.guelph.ca/node/11452

3. VERY interesting history and some very useful clues if you want to pursue them:
http://www.guelphm...ory-and-much-more/

4. The church referenced by Bach565 and its possibly containing a huge sub-structure as well as its link to the great, great, great great, etc. grandson of Jesus himself! (Great conspiracy theory stuff)
http://www.wampumk...om/Guelphhill.html

The list goes on and on. The legend of the Guelph Tunnels is an interesting one and certainly one what would earn you a small degree of fame if you could be the one to solve it. The above list provides a huge number of clues including locations, names of places and people all of which are a great place to start. If it were me I would even place on my list-O-people to call the building inspection department as well as the municipal water folks. Just do some research and let us know what you find yourself (preferably first hand when you visit Guelph not stuff like the above). Which now brings me to another point. If it was this easy for me to do why the hell didnt you? To illustrate my point further I'm going to amaze you with a personal story.

While in college I was working for a security company as a clerk. Having just begun and not knowing ANYTHING whatsoever about where things were, what they were or how I was supposed to do the myriad menial tasks constantly given to me, I found I was going to my boss and constantly asking questions. Part of this was I didnt want to screw up the other part was that nobody trained me or told me how to do my job.

After a week of this I was frustrated. As luck would have it I was reading Atlas Shrugged for the 2nd time and it dawned on me. I sat down and made myself a sign for my desk - a constant reminder RIGHT in my face of what I believed the famed John Galt (oddly enough a real person mentioned on website #4 above) character would do. The sign read, "Dont tell me your problems, show me your results". With that I buckled down even more and instead of asking questions I just began to figure shit out myself.

Thats my advice to you. Dont ask us for site information BRING us your site information (in the form of photos, stories, etc.). Its called Urban EXPLORATION for a reason. Dont be a follower be a leader and go out and find your own way. Asking for help and advice is fine and encouraged but its far more exciting figuring it out on your own.

FYI discussion of specific locations is not against UER rules. That's kind of why we are here...

One person finds an interesting spot of interest to share, and someone else from a thousand miles away starts contacting local government to purposely put a STOP to any fun. Really? WTF? Up here we say mind yer own.......
Just saying.
