Beyond a driveway that is no more stands the crumbling remains of a farmhouse. Each side has begun to buckle inwards; gravity and nature slowly force the structure into its basement. The heavily decaying interior leaves much to the imagination; what did this farmhouse look like in it’s day?

Yellowed papers scattered over the dusty hardwood floors reveal the date 1986 and a young girl’s schoolwork. Any further remnants of this life have since been cleared away, the only witness the layers of peeling paint left behind. This mystery household has been left to the elements, its story carried away with wind, rain, and snow throughout the years.

Excellent set. I must say, I really love the tealy-blue you find in old homes and hospitals as it adds such a vibrant look to the shots.

The dark contrast in "A Wild Chair Appears" is superb. I think I spent the whole first 2-3 years of exploring brightening all the shadows in my photos to reveal more details... what a mistake that was.

I still can't get over the virtual absence of raccoon crap in this place, despite every window and door missing. Compare the stairway in your last interior shot to this one in a place I recently visited... where every step holds a full smorgasbord of treats.

Maybe once a house reaches a certain level of openness, the raccoons actually stop using it rather than use it more. Or at least, stop using it for a shitter.

Thank you!! I love finding vibrant colours in these places, I think that was what drew me to this location - despite having almost nothing remaining, the peeling paint colours are beautiful.

It is very strange. I have seen houses as open as this one that are full of the stuff... I wonder if something kept them away?

Thanks Ground State!

As for the coon poop it may have something to do with the integrity of this place. One small flatulence of fluff and the place might collapse in on itself haha.

Nice set Storytrail! I really like the last photo, decay is great. There's something so awesome about really decayed, barely standing places...I just love them. Thanks for posting!

Very nice decay in this one. Most of the time I'd rather see heavy decay in a house than an untouched house that could be a MLS listing. Decay is what it's all about for me.

I definitely agree with both of you. Sometimes it is interesting to see more recent abandonments, mostly because it's much easier to piece together exactly what happened.

But in terms of photos, I prefer the decay. It's much cooler to me to see how nature has begun to reclaim the space... it's also usually much easier access to get inside!

I really like this post and as plan and simple as it is, am growing so tired of "time capsules" and places that don't look abandoned and pissing contests of who was first and dick waving over locations. Recently I've been craving a good old simple abandoned house, empty of contents and full of decay and texture...just like this one.

Great work, thanks for posting this.

You mean, almost any posting lately? I miss the "open-community" feel we seem to have lost over the last few years. Now it seems like every location is a big secret to only be shared with those who are "deemed worthy" by very specific people. Not too much community sharing goes on anymore.

It's always interesting to see a rather nice location being posted, then to watch which individuals end up being privy to the location info. There's very obvious trends, and unfortunately, rarely do those trends change.

I don't want to derail this post from the original photos, so I'll try to make this brief (but as always, I ramble so it won't be brief). Looking over the Ontario forum in particular, there are no recent signs of 'dick waving' or 'pissing contests' as claimed. Sometimes people look at another post and interpret it as such, but it's only an interpretation.

Case in point, I recently posted a set of five locations that I felt were new to social media. I took the time to include a nice write up about them. Was there any egotism involved? No. Was there any bragging of "I have this, you don't?" No. Have I shared it with other people? Absolutely.

I'd like to know what posts and by whom, you feel are 'dick waving' but with you being able to actually back up with facts why this is.

Going back to previous responses...

Time capsule houses are a preference, some like them and some don't. I love them because it's going back in time before the decay but after the owners left. Drama house, Somewhere House and Time in a Bottle house were excellent examples of decades worth of memories perfectly preserved. For the historian and explorer, these are amazing.

Decay is easily found any day of the week, a preserved house is more difficult to find and as such they are highly sought after (by those I know anyway). Even if a place doesn't 'look' abandoned, it can still be a great pleasure to photograph. Hardwood floors, walls, trim around the doors, etc. all add to the esthetic appeal. As many of these eventually end up demolished, it's important to capture them on camera. As much fun as it is to inhale raccoon feces stench and put your feet through rotting floors, at times it's amazing to be able to sit down and look through old letters in a dresser, clothes in a closet and see the living room exactly as it was left in the 70's.

Finally...

I can tell you exactly when and where I think this 'trend' began. It began with the "Drama House" when it was decided to exclude others from the location. That resulted in people having to ask, beg, sleuth the location. I remembered those who shared with me, but I also remembered those who chose not to. To this day the decisions made by the community back then still carry consequences today.

It further propagated to a collective of people deciding to exclude more and more people from other locations. But Drama House was the first.... until that time the community generally enjoyed sharing amongst themselves. Aside from one person in all of Ontario, I allowed any of my content to be shared among everyone else. After Drama House, there were numerous rifts between people.

I also feel that the rifts were unavoidable and bound to occur in time. We enjoyed several years of "one community" coming together and it was great! At the same time as the online community grew, with new people entering the hobby as it become more widely publicized in the media, it was inevitable.

And it's not going to change... there will continue to be different cliques each finding new places, publishing new places and others looking at those photos and thinking, "Wow I'd like to go there".

I feel that way when I see other people's photos.. but I don't say to myself, "Oh they're dick waving and this is a pissing match". It is what it is - something someone else has access to, and you currently don't. But an address isn't a material object, and can be eventually learned. That isn't to say people will share them with you, loyalty to friends comes before those who've done you wrong.

Sorry for the ramble, it was semi-relevant to the topic but not on topic with the original post. So I'll leave it at that.

p.s. Just enjoy the hobby for fucks sakes. When you look at people's accomplishments and want to see them as being extensions of the poster's penis, that's the first mindset that needs to change. Nobody explores harder, faster or better than anyone else. Nobody has a longer e-penis than anyone else.

Cheers!

Oh dear, I seem to have upset you (again). Allow me to clarify. My original reply was with regards to UER, a community of explorers. When you use Facebook as a context it's a whole different ballgame.

First, there has been an ongoing issue of people leaving location information in comments - where thousands of people can see it. There's also been people who've taken those photos and re-published them without permission on other FB pages asking for address information.

When this happens, we see social media fill up with photos of said location. So yes, I indicated that the images weren't on Google, were't on Flickr and not on Flickr. It is what it is - acknowledgment of having something unique. And I rarely see places that are 'unique', mainly repeat visits of the same old.

So I apologize profusely for taking pride in something, on a social media platform that is plagued with people trying to ask for addresses, and failing to credit where they found the information. Clearly visiting my page is something that brings you anger and makes you upset, so I can only suggest not viewing it.

Be everything as it may be, it still comes down to exactly what I said. Was there bragging of having something someone else didn't? Nope - because people in the exploration community do have this location. It's not a secret whatsoever. It's just that it hasn't been posted to social media - precisely as I wrote.

It's pretty sad that a grown man is so upset by the words I write that he continually has to whine about it on here. As for your screen captures, we both know who's behind them - as one of your very own buddies admitted to intentionally trying ot stir the pot. Shall we review his email?

It's unfortunate that you dwell on my words so much and frequent a page that clearly bring you such anger and butthurt. I mean if time capsule houses and clean houses and people taking pride in their finds is so upsetting to you, why do you continue to view it?

Just as the idiot who sits in front of a television swearing that a show is repulsive and awful, so do you have the power to change the media. Until then - keep watching, keep hating, and you and your friends keep on with the fake comments.

I'll leave it at that, having broke my 'one reply' rule.... apologies to OP. Back on topic after another aggressive reply in...3...2....1

How unfortunate that this thread is being derailed.

Storytrail, thanks for rekindling in me the love that I used to have for abandoned houses. That's where I started exploring, til I "moved up" to bigger industrial stuff and lost interest in "lowly" houses. I'd forgotten the excitement I felt when exploring them. Keep up the good work.

Storytrail I cannot believe that you would post such a controversial and inflammatory thread. I'm certain that years from now when people harken back to their fond memories of this site, they will remember your post as the catalyst that ended it all.

I'm also certain that this was your intention as well. Oh you're good. You spent weeks, no months, planning the perfect location to stir up the divisions amongst the members here. I can hear your girlish chuckle as you approached the site that you knew would rip us apart. Camera in hand you shoot a dozen photos of the exterior looking for the perfect angle that you knew would unleash the subconscious rage in us all.

Then, as you crept inside, sweeping the spiderwebs from your face you saw it - stairs! Surely this will generate the wrath of the group. Their perfect symmetry is bound to release the beast in their breasts. Again another dozen or so shots as the chuckle begins to become manaical laughter.

But oh no this wasnt enough for your well thought through scheme! You wanted more! A lonely chair! A bathtub! Peeling paint! The camera going off like a crazed machine gunner mowing down its victims! Before you knew it you were in a frenzy! And then it all stopped. You regain your composure...

Breathing heavily, disheveled hair, sweat running from your brow, you begin making your way out of the structure that was surely to end UER forever!

Then the long drive home. Silence. You drive but arent really looking at the road. The voices stirring in your head in a battle as fierce as the one you knew would ensue if you posted these images. You knew what this wold do. Was it right? So much time and planning it cant all go to waste! But surely it would be wrong to post these images that would end not only a website but probably lives as well.

It didnt matter. You were on your mission and it HAD to be completed. With your resolve now strengthened, you gun the gas and laugh again out loud! You cannot wait to get home and begin the next phase of your diabolical plan.

You enter and its dark and quiet, the only sound the humming of the computer fan. Making your way to the bar you fix a drink and pull out the memory card from the camera. Starring at it you realize you have the power of life itself on a small 1.5" piece of plastic. Your relish the moment, savoring what you know must come next.

Sitting down in your leather backed computer chair, you slide the card into your computer and a window pops up - the file folder containing the images that will shatter the world. Three short clicks takes you to the preview screen and you examine each tiny miniaturized photograph. You know that any one of these will set the world on fire but you dont care.

Then you load them up into your Photoshop program, picking out the most incendiary ones and begin your hellish work. Focus adjustments are first. You need clean images. Exposure, gamma correction, curves and finally colors - the most important part. Choosing only those harsh hues that will stir up the boiling blood of any man, you enhance, sharpen and saturate. Sliding the bars to their perfect positions gives you pleasurable chills down your spine as you think about the repercussions of what you are doing.

Finally its time to save the images. "Save all" is usually fine but not on this day - oh no! Each horrific illustration must be packed away individually, softly less it lose its effectiveness or god forbid release its destructive fury prematurely. Again the smile crosses your face as you think about what is to come.

Having finished creating your little bombs you take a deep breath and look at the clock. Its been 16 hours! How did time escape me? But you realize that its not important. You still have work to do. Fixing another drink you again sit in front of that computer screen and begin the final phase of your reign of terror.

Having planned this for months you knew exactly what to do. Your fingers flying across the keyboard. This was practiced, rehearsed time and again. Your mind is numb and it's all muscle memory at this point. A frenzy of activity, upload speeds blazing past as the file names just seem to disappear in an instant as they plant themselves ready to explode at a moments notice.

Then that critical juncture arrives that you have waited for for so long. Its done. All thats left is to hit "Post". The moment begins to weigh on you. You need time to think. You begin pacing around the room, fingers running through your tangled hair. "I cant do this", you say to yourself. "It's wrong!" You fix another drink and pour it down your scorched and parched throat, not even tasting its sweet flavor of feeling the burn as it goes down.

You find yourself starring in the mirror in the bathroom and begin to cry. The tears begin slowly but quickly build into open sobbing. Your stomach heaves a primal scream as you know that these pictures will end it all and you smash your fists into the glass shattering it and cutting your hands. Blood drips down your arms as the salt from your tears is now pouring into your mouth.

Suddenly the phone rings and you are startled. You turn to look and dread takes hold of every fiber. It's Bvmblebee.... Oh god not him! Not now! You know you have to answer but paralysis grips you. Somehow you find yourself saying in a small voice, "hello?"

"Is it done?" comes the reply. You dont know what to say. You're so confused right now but you cannot let him know about the doubts so you reply, "Not...not yet. I'm still" but before you can finish he breaks in. "What do you mean not yet! We talked about this for months! You know it has to be done. This UER thing is a cancer on society and the only way to bring it down is from the inside! Now if you dont finish this - I WILL!"

The, "I WILL" sends you into a panic. "I know, I know. I'm...I'm almost there. Just give me a few more minutes while it uploads." You hate to lie to him but its the only thing you can do at this point - he cannot know your reservations. A cackling laugh comes across the line, "Hehehehe...thats my girl" and the line goes dead.
