I had to order a cat for my Subaru today. I love the wording... "Not legal for sale or use in California or in New York with cars with California emissions"

uh huh.

I ordered it anyway.
Why would an upstream O2 sensor be more expensive that a downstream?
I ran the engine/emission family by some Subaru forums and it doesn't seem to be California emissions (the car was originally sold in Maryland), so i guess I get to see whether or not I wasted $238 on a catalytic converter.

It will say on the hood tag "meets federal and California emissions standards " or just "meets federal emissions standards " . I just bought a real nice 2000 outback yesterday to use during the winter for $500 had a "rod knock " that's actually just a bad timing belt tensioner .

the people on the Subie forums were pretty much unanimous that the cat I ordered will work regardless of what emissions the stupid thing has. I just need a converter because one of them is plugged.

it will work, aslong as you 02 sensors arent destroyed youll be fine, worst case throw in a vibrant 02 spacer

ive installed numerous aftermarket highflo cats on cars and never have gotten a check engine light or anything.

The Upstream O2 sensor is a more calibrated sensor that is used to adjust the air/fuel mixture ratio while the downstream O2 sensor is more deaf as it just is there to detect if the cat is working right.

As for the stanmping, NY DEC requires that if your 93 or newer car has a cat that has a NY or California specific cat, you need to replace it with such a cat. I'n guessing in your case you don't have one.

New York can suck balls.
I ordered an Eastern Catalytic converter that meets federal emissions. The car was originally purchased in maryland in 2000. I am not spending $700+ for a NY/CA emission converter... not for a car that isn't work $2k.

the code that the car has had from day one has always been catalyst inefficiency. who wants an inefficient converter?

You don't need one anyways...your vehicle never came with that specific cat, so your good.

Even up in Canada our cats are labelled as not necessarily being California compliant.

We had Manic, producer of the Manic GT.

McLaughlin, which was absorbed by Buick at some point.

And now we just have Prevost Coach.

And we do build a bunch of stuff here for GM, Chrysler, Ford, Toyota and Honda.

what's the best part of owning a Subaru other than the AWD? The whimsical CHECK ENGINE LIGHT... on. off. on. off. on. off. on. off. on. off. off. off. off. on. on. on. still on. Oh look, off again. Still off. On. On. Off. Look, inspection time. ON! FUCK!

still, love my piece of shit Subaru.

That's also a VW thing. I'm more worried when it's off.

My favourite sticker ever is my sticker that says "I F[check engine light]CKING LOVE VOLKSWAGEN", despite the fact I've only ever had two engine codes thrown in the 7 years I've owned my JettaWagen. A random torque converter code once and never seen again, and boost issues which were easily fixed by having the turbo cleaned out.
