Abandonment in Etobicoke

Hey guys! This is my second post to the forum. Today I want to share another awesome location that I discovered walking around the neighbourhood. I’m not sure what sort of building it is, it’s been hard to find information on it’s history, but it probably used to be a manufacturing facility of some sort. The place is surrounded by chain link fence, but a lot of it is damaged and overgrown by trees. The hardest part is getting in without been seen by a car driving past. One way to get around that is to go down a side road a half block east. I’m pretty sure that the road leads to nothing but more private property, so it’s a bit of a toss-up in terms of which route seems less suspicious. I’ve done both, depending on how busy the traffic is that time of night.
All of the entrances on the ground level are boarded up except for [entry details removed]. When I visited, the floor was flooded to about ankle height, so bring rubber boots. From the basement, there’s a stairway that goes up three floors, and a ladder that goes to the third floor from the second floor. Interesting that there are two ways to traverse the different levels. There’s quite a bit of specialized machinery that I don’t understand on all the floors. There’s also a giant hook on a chain pulley that goes up three floors. On the third floor, there’s a ladder to the roof. Cool stuff. I didn’t fancy walking around on the roof, partly because it was cold and windy and partly because it was hard to tell how sound it was in the dark.
Anyways, here’s some more awful pictures of my experience. I’m off on holiday, but will be back with more adventures in the new year!

cool that you were able to get inside. I've tried once or twice but it was always sealed up tight. This was, in fact, the only location at which I've ever been "busted" by the police, who rolled up literally as I was about to exit the property. They were pretty cool and let me go after they saw I was only trying to take photos, but the experience certainly discouraged me from trying again. They said the neighbors across the street saw a big group of people there and called it in - they must have left before I arrived because it was just me.

I live close by to this spot and can say this...while interesting, it's fairly empty inside and full of pigeon shit. Across the street is a co-op housing development and a lot of the residents there keep their eyes on the place.

Hey Steppin,

Nice shots and awesome location! Glad to see you brought the appropriate footwear (is the whole thing that wet?)

You may consider editing out the point-of-entry information though:

Hey Viscount! Edited like you suggested.
Only the basement is that wet. About ankle deep. The other floors are bone dry.

Thanks! We generally don't like posting how to get into places publically, because all varieties of ne'er-do-wells can see this site, who might do more than just exploring.

I've been to so many places where the basement is flooded, and usually the basement is one of the coolest things to explore in it! It's so annoying to not be able to explore a steam tunnel or vast mechanical room because I didn't bring the right footwear, so kudos to you for being on the ball there!

@Viscount, thanks for catching that.

I actually wasn't as prepared as you think, I had to go home for boots after I saw the state of the basement. Glad I did, since you can't reach the stairwell without walking through water.

Okay, while I am not certain of the details of the location exactly, I can take an educated guess... See those shiny black things? Now, assuming I am right those might be ceramic electrical insulators. The sheer number of them leads me to believe the place was once a substation, sort of like the one existing in north york that is now disused. Part of this reason is because of the photos of said pylons, and part is due to prior knowledge of the fact that many local power grids like that one shut down due to the switchover to a full Ontario-regulated power grid for most major cities.

Here is an image of an insulator for reference;

Their purpose is to separate electrical lines from making contact with other metal. The versions in there seem a little different, more closely resembling one that has connections on two ends separated by the ceramic

Every building and site has a story, and they are often of mistakes. Learn from them before they are gone forever.

I almost didn't recognize the location from your pics. I was wondering how long it would take this place to open up again.

Wow cool, blast from the past. Glad you made it in. As Zen mentioned, it's a substation, pretty uninteresting and full of pigeon shit. When I visited this place in 2011 there was a pretty gnarly raccoon living upstairs.
