Just bought a 1974 Toyota FJ55 Land Cruiser in North Carolina. 80% restored. 214K on the motor. Here is the issue:

They want $2400 to ship it. I can fly out there, ship my tools UPS and drive it back for about $1000. I'm more than mechanical enough to fix anything except a catastrophic failure by the side of the road. I think driving a 42 year 4x4 across the deep South in February might be an epic adventure. It could also result in a breakdown in Bum Fuck Kentucky resulting in a shooting by some lonely road at 3:00 AM.

Opinions?

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Drive it. Nothing in that thing is the least bit complicated and something that went wrong could easily be ghettoed on the side of the road.

Sounds like a sweet adventure! 214k isnt too awfully high on the toyota inline motors, my old 4 runner was up at 268k and still running well...

Drive it. Just bring camping gear in case you really get stranded.

I would drive it, but FWIW that price quote is outrageous. I got a quote to ship my jeep from Ohio to Cali for about $1k (between two major cities). Ended up driving it anyways. If it breaks down anything too crazy, just rent a truck and flat tow it.
