Originally built as Fürst zu Stolberg luxury hotel in 1898, the building was designed in Reformstil, an architectural style, that is typical for the Harz region. In 1946, when Wernigerode got into the soviet occupated zone, the name was changed to Hotel Heinrich Heine. After the communization of the hotel, ministers and senior party functionaries enjoyed the sumptuousness, which led to displease of the people because of the antithesis to the socialistic maxim. As a result the director got arrested. After decline of the GDR the building got abandoned, it didn't meet the requirements of western facilities. Since 2013 there are plans to maintain and reconstruct at least parts of the partially collapsed complex.
