First time exploring this location.

Some friends and I got up at 6 am to make the 4 hour drive up. After a quick meeting with the owner we headed to the prison. The snowplow had stopped plowing a bit of a ways from the train tracks, so we just parked there because it's crown land (as far as we know). The snow was at least waist deep, and even when you stepped on the middle of the trail (which was somewhat packed down) you went down to your knees. We were told that the walk would take around an hour and fifteen minutes, but it took more like three.

Anyway, we finally got to the building and explored, took pics, etc. A lot of the inside was covered with a frost that made it sparkle in the light. After around 2 hours of exploring and trying to dry out our wet, snow-filled boots we left. The way back took a lot less time since we could walk in our footprints from the way there. I was kinda worried that my vehicle would get towed or something, but it was there and we left. The day took longer than we thought it would, but it was successful and we had a great time.

Here are some of my best and most interesting pics (hope this isn't too many).

Thanks for posting. I live in the area so I've been here many times, but never in the winter. The hike in must have sucked! I love shot #4 with the ice...very neat!

We used to have UE weekend camp outs here - too bad with the new owner that won't be happening any more.

I agree with Match Girl on #4.

I can't even imagine that walk in that much snow! That's just crazy.

The ice was really cool, there were frozen pipes with icicles coming out, frozen pools of water in the basement that were clear enough to see through, and as I mentioned in the original post many of the surfaces were covered in a sparkly frost.
The snow was quite an obstacle, especially for two of my friends who weren't even wearing snow boots. If anyone else is planning to go this time of the year I'd STRONGLY recommend snowshoes or XC skis.

Thanks for the post and nice pics.

On the owner's website he mentions a fee. Did you have to pay anything?

Were you able to go on the date you wanted?

We were able to go on the date we wanted. He didn't accompany us on a tour or anything. TBH we could totally have gotten the same result without getting permission, but we wanted to go the legal route.

We did pay him, and because I believe his site used to say "under no circumstances will anyone be allowed to enter the building" as opposed to the current "under no circumstances ... without signing a waiver" we probably offered a little high. I'd recommend contacting him at the email he provides for this purpose on his site and either asking him how much he wants or maybe offering ~$10/person in your group.

Great, thanks.

Also, just curious, how does the owner get in and out of the property? Or does he just not leave for most of the winter?

No problem, good luck if you decide to try another trip.

The owner doesn't actually live on the property. I doubt he goes to it much in the winter.

Question

The Burwash plaque pictured here (http://ontarioplaq...ue_SudburyD03.html) says the inmates served sentences of 3 months-2 years.

But Wikipedia says that, "One of the few successful escapes from the prison took place on May 17, 1966, when convicted murderer Wayne Ford and two other prisoners escaped into the bush, walking for 16 miles before stealing a car and making it to Toronto."

https://en.wikiped...i/Burwash,_Ontario

Surely a murderer was not serving such a short sentence. What's the story?

Also, assuming the plaque is correct, why build the prison in such a remote location if it would house low-risk inmates for short sentences?

20$ per person. Plus 10$ per person per night to camp out. Currently undergoing renovations. Access to buildings permitted via waiver and payment. Eventually this will make a nice museum.
