I've sorta been "semi retired" from 'sploring these days. That's why I was pretty excited when this show was assigned to me. I'm a colorist for Vice. This is a new series they will be airing in a couple of months. It's hosted by pro skater Rick McCrank. On this episode he explores abandoned fishing villages along the coast of Newfoundland.

This series looks amazing. It's not about the hobby of urbex. Its just following Rick around while he explores, meets locals, and, of course, goes for a rip on his skateboard through an abandoned shopping mall.....

It's well shot and written. Figured you folks would enjoy it.

I really liked the vice guide to film. Wish there was more stuff like that around.

OT: What's going on with vice and their attitude toward drugs in the past few years? They seemed to be cool with drugs other then weed before, but now most of the articles I see on vice seem to read like DARE scare stories, mixed in with "everyone should smoke pot" stories.

re. OT: Because what was once 'the' voice of subculture is now, quite literally, pop culture. Vice' subversive content has been neutered. Now it's an 'open-mindedness, as long as you believe exactly what I do' kind of pop-leftist-mainstreamcore listacle-flavoured pseudo-snob piece of middle-brow mediocrity, that's just trying to keep hanging with their own lame perception of the cool kids, forgetting that if it's easy, you're doing it wrong.

Oh come on Jono, tell us how you really feel. I do agree with you somewhat and I do make sure not drink the kool aid here. (maybe the free beer) ...but I'll be damned if it isn't a helluva fun place to work.

Vice is now partially owned by Rogers. Expect to see some changes, but probably some of the better commercial Canadian docs being regularly produced. They got a cool studio in Liberty village, thats got to give them some street cred ;)

So I'm enjoying the show. And the colour grading is excellent.

I think it would be better phrased as Rogers is heavily invested. Vice still retains complete creative control. ...and yeah, the space is pretty rad.

Thanks guys... I knew folks here would like it. Color grading-wise, it's the softest contrast I have ever graded. lol.

Right from the outset, their goal was to avoid making "ruins porn." The word "urbex" is never uttered. Anybody could fly a drone through the Packard plant and call it a day. They set out to tell the stories behind the locations. Past, present and future.
