After an extended stay in hospital, and in the midst of buying a house, and the whirlwind of chaos that is daily life, Ninj and I finally broke free for a morning to explore the Small Arms Inspection Building in Mississauga with our dear friends terapr0 and his lovely wife tash.0.

Come on in with us won't you...

Well it only took me three days to get through your post! Such a busy week... I only digested small parts of it at a time so I could fully enjoy it. I wasn't expecting this place to be so clean! Something about the name and your aerial shot of the land around it, I thought it was going to be falling to pieces, with piles of grime everywhere. What do you think that green paint was for that was haphazardly slopped across that light switch?

I know they've filmed portions of a few movies & TV shows in there, so my guess would be something related to that.

The building is in pretty good shape, save for a little water damage and a host of broken windows. Fortunately a group of citizens, along with the city and TRCA were able to intervene to save the building before it got any worse. There seems to be a core group of local shithead kids that thinks it's fun to smash out all of the windows, but it's otherwise been left alone. I think that the tunneling project next door, functioning alarm and ample foot traffic have been the one saving grace preventing it from really going downhill, considering how long it sat empty. I see so many cool old buildings get torn down, it's nice to see one saved, especially just down the road from my home.

An excellent site, shots, and write up about a critical time in world history and a largely forgotten group of people who helped the Allies achieve victory.

In Britain during WW1, the women who worked in the ammo plants and turned yellow were called 'Canary girls'. Unfortunately it was more than just skin deep. It's disheartening to hear this continued into the WWII-era as well. The yellow coloring is caused by chronic exposure to TNT. Anyone who has handled nitro based explosives known of the headaches it can produce through skin absorption. Large amounts absorbed over long periods can permanently damage your health.
A steep price was paid by many of those workers for their war efforts.

WW2 history is fascinating and still visible today.
