Name of underground train?

Underground trains have many different names.

In United Kinkdom it's called the "Tube" because the original lines were built in iron tubes.

In French it's called the "Metropolitain" which is an abbreveration from Train Metropolitain Souterrain. (Metropolitain from metropole = big city) This is shortened down to "Metro".

In the Netherlands both the names "ondergrondse" == "underground" and metro are used equally.

In Charleroi the system is calles "Metro Leger" or "Light Metro" because big parts of it aren't underground.

I understand in US they use the names "subway" and "underground" as well --- where are these used (is it different in, for examle, east and west coast) and are there other names in use? For non-=english names, could you pleas give a close approximation in english?

Here in Chicago the part of the trainline that runs underground is the "subway", and the part that is above street level is called the "L", which is short for "eLeveted train line." Portions of our public trasportation trains run at street level--we just call those "the train." However, since one trainline can run underground, at street level, and above street level, these names are somewhat interchangeable.

New York's underground trains are called "the subway" as well. I don't know about other places in the US. I believe some places use "metro", but that is more of a reference to the body governing the train line.

I always thought US names for underground trains were somewhat unimaginative--I kinda like "the tube", for example, better than "subway".

In Washington DC it is called the Metro.

http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm

It's a nice system, easy to use. It would be cool if they connected it to Richmond, VA.

Some of New Yorks subways routes are named with letters--the "E" train runs between Manhattan and Queens. So maybe that's it, but we are talking about Futurama here, so who knows...

Does the ter "E-Train" not refer to the above grade elevated sections of a subway system? I know in Chicago its referred to as the "El", for elevated.

The underground in Toronto is referred to as the "Subway" and Montreal has adapted the european term "Metro" for theirs.

I personally think "The Iron Worm" would be the coolest.

In toronto, the Transit Authority uses the nickname "The Rocket" for all of it's vehicles, catch phrase: "Ride the Rocket!"

In Finnish it's just a Metro, borrowed the word from some other language, like many new "modern" Finnish words.

In Toronto, the above ground commuter trains are known as the GO Train. (GO=Government of Ontario).

GO Transit is an interregional public transit system, established to link Toronto with the surrounding regions of the Greater Toronto Area.

For a look at the GO Train's rolling stock and locos, check the link:

http://www.trainweb.org/gotransit/

EDIT- not underground train, but neat name for a train system.

In Edmonton, we've got the LRT (Light Rail Transit). It's two sets of tracks, parallel (one runs northbound and one southbound usually). In the downtown area, it's underground, but mostly it's at street level. The official name is LRT, but we often just call it "the train".

In Calgary it's the c-train ;)

Société de Transport de la Communauté Urbaine de Montreal
(Greater Montreal Area Transit Corporation).

In the city mergers, they have now changed the name to Société de Transport de Montreal (STM) (Montreal Transit Corporation).

In Vancouver we have the terribly unimaginative "Sky Train". Why? It's elevated! Same system as Kuala Lumpur, Bankok etc.
http://www.transli...ransit/default.asp

For transit geeks like me ... when our transit system changed their branding and stuff, they had a few different options. One was the one shown here:
http://www.transli...rvices/default.asp

One of the rejected designs, seen on the defunct Pacificat fast ferry here... http://www.geociti..._pcatexplorerP.jpg ...was a similarly stylized eagle for the Skytrain, killer whale for the Sea Bus (a fun ride), and deer for the buses.
