In Washington DC it is called the Metro.

http://www.wmata.c...rail/systemmap.cfm

It's a nice system, easy to use. It would be cool if they connected it to Richmond, VA.

Here in DC it's called the Metro because the city's transit system (buses, trains, etc.) is run by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, so take Metro from that and there you go.

The current project is running a line to Dulles.

BWI would get a line, but they've already got MARC access.

Like the Marc train connects to Baltimore, that would be great...

If they could run light rails between DC and Richmond and Baltimore to Philly, you could ride public transportation from Richmond to New York.

Edit: but why do that when you can catch one of those Chinese buses for $10...

Pffft... Greyhound sucks.

Dragon buses (slang) run about $35 round trip to NY from Baltimore or DC, or $25 round trip DC to Philly.

Here in Philly we have the "El" which, like Chicago, runs above ground, usually above nheiborhood streets. As it nears the downtown area, it goes underground essentialy becoming a subway. Then as it leaves center city, it then goes above ground again, back over the city streets. Also we have trolleys which are similiar. They start the trip below ground in the downtown area, then they come out to street level and ride along the trolley tracks embedded into the street. Theyre powered by cables above the trolley. We also have the typical regional rail trains to NY, DC, etc. Fat Louie is right though, you cant beat those dragon buses!
