I'm a fat, old, smoker so I opt for the latter.

You crack me up!

I too have just waved at people. Ive always had permission, so I'm a wuss, and Im new at this, but I am a microbiologist and I have sampling gear with me most of the time. To everyone around - I look like I'm working. I am ...sorta....

I did have an idea and maybe the FMs can comment on what they think of it as a deterrent to people questioning my presence. I too park close by.

What about getting a magnet made for your car with the name of your "company" on it. I always carry a large contractor clipboard too. Again, I usually AM there for a reason, but it seems like it would work if I was also just curious. I think this is called "social engineering". I am reading a book rec. here on the site called "Access All Areas" by ninjalicious. I ordered it off Amazon. Maybe read that book. Its very informative. I have learned I'm a natural social engineer. My ex called that being a master manipulator but tomato-tomahto.... LOL

I don't know you so I couldn't say for sure but if you look anything like me (big and ugly) that might help or be part of the reason.

Sadly, bums and junkies and gang bangers just don't want to interact with me. Ive even scared a couple of cops once! (they didn't appreciate it so that's the last time I'll ever jump out in the dark and say boo mofo to a policeman)

If someone calls your rouse they won't be in a very reception mood.
Why lie if the truth would serve you better?
Say you like to collect samples and of coarse images to help document their environment. It's a hobby of yours...
A couple grand of cam gear was my free pass in to many a shoot, maybe culture plates would work well too. Talk the talk, walk the walk...

Avoid using company names including fake.

Cops hate being lied to...

I always try to park a good walk away. Never out front. Never want anymore attention drawn than what's already gonna be.

Same. The vast majority of the time I've ever been caught is because someone saw our car out front and got suspicious. It is a pain to park it far away but unless its a pretty abandoned area or theres a good hiding place near the building I always park far enough away to not arouse suspicion

It honestly depends where I'm exploring. Like the others said the closer you park the less likely it is that you will get caught, but sometimes I don't always feel comfortable parking right out front as I feel it attracts attention to the place I'll be going in. If there are any businesses or parking lots with cars in them nearby I generally try to park there and just walk, as I feel like I "blend in" so to say, but there have been times when I've had to hide from security and wished my car was just a little closer.

I usually park and walk. I get paranoid and I don't want anyone getting my plate, lol.

I used to have a shitty old Jeep and I would drive that right up to buildings because it sorta fit in, if that makes sense. But now I have a shiny Prius and it...definitely does not fit in and is super noticeable. So I park it a ways away and walk.

Not an unreasonable concern. This actually happened to me a couple of years back. The location was a paper mill that was being actively scrapped. The managers followed me back to my car in pickup trucks, and sent my license plate number to the police before I could drive away.

It legit depends on the location and the situation. I've parked miles away (I have walked 10+ miles round trip to see what I want) or I've parked right in front and just breezed in and out. These are, I suppose, the two extreme ends of the spectrum and most places fall in between. I usually park nearby and just move confidently like I know where I'm going and I'm supposed to be there. I've rarely been stopped, questioned or harassed. I've not been arrested (fingers crossed this stays the same) and I've not been ticketed (yet at least, part of me feels its eventually inevitable and ideally it will be minor enough to maintain my mid-level security clearance).

I do usually come up with a reason why I'm there before I get in; again this is situation though. I've also found that there are big pluses and minuses to being a woman - big pluses: I'm not threatening, rarely elicit attention and there's something about pulling the "dumb girl" card that I both loathe and will use shamelessly as needed. Big minuses: being alone is a huge, huge risk of I encounter the wrong person or people.

Ultimately, do a drive by irl or on Google street view. Plot a couple of potential parking places and then just do the damn thing!

For me it really depends on the location and the visibility of that location. Sometimes I will park right our front which is great for keeping an eye n your car but also in a way makes it look like you belong there. Other times there is no other option than to walk a mile or two to get to the location due to security, traffic, prying eyes, or otherwise especially if there is nowhere closer to park your car. But I am someone who loves exercise so it really depends on who you are and your preferences.

Personally, I like to use Google Maps or similar and search the surrounding area, then park somewhere nondescript like a fast food parking lot or big box store lot or whatever, if possible.

It pays to walk/hike a little bit. Depending on the place, parking out front may or may not mean the difference between getting caught/detained.

This is my approach. If I can find a spot where I know my car will be safe/not suspicious, I don't mind hiking an hour to get to my destination. This also provides plenty of space to find a sneaky way to get to where I'm going.
