Brickmaking Factory - Toronto

So today I got the chance to check out a brick making factory in Toronto. It's a pretty mainstream Urbex place so I'm going to assume many of you know of it already.

What you may not know is that the place is currently active with a bunch of workers in black shirts. It seems like they are making the place into some sort of museum and for some reason are putting flowers and black fabric up everywhere.

The security is pretty chill about people wandering in but I got shoo'ed away after they noticed I climbed on top of the kilns.

Anyways, check it out if you can because who knows what its going to look like in the future.

3. Kinda gives the location away and normally I would avoid this but since the place is currently under construction I'm not too worried because it's not like anyone is going to mess it up anymore than the workers will.

I'm not really sure what you mean. Could you clarify?

Yes! it is graffiti. It's really quite something isn't it. Besides the obvious skill of the artist, what really caught my eye was how big it was. This location is right beside a fairly busy road, and this tag must have taken quite a long time. The artist would have had to have a lot of guts.

Yep this place is very active. The Brickworks has been owned by Evergreen for a while now. Not so secret where this is... The kiln building is often used as an event venue. Really great farmer's markets here!

You kinda missed the boat on that one, so to speak. Brickworks was amazing before Evergreen took over, now you can book events in the kiln area. They demolished a chunk of it too and some of the machinery is sealed up in a section of the buildings. Have a look at my Flickr set from '08/'09 if you want to see what it used to look like.

I guess that explains the black shirt workers and the curtains they were putting up... Ah well, the place is still super cool looking but thanks guys!

I checkout out your set SQualie, they were really sweet! Almost wish I didn't look at them cause now I know what I missed out on

My original comment was just referring to you saying it's an Urbex place, haha. It's been an active location for several years now. There's a farmers market held here, a gorgeous flower nursery in the spring/early summer and even a cafe inside! Hardly the abandonment it once was. ;)

There is an old rail line running past the Brickworks.

Goes from Millwood to around Gerrard.

If you are feeling adventurous you can follow it across the Half-Mile Bridge.

It`s not graffiti. It`s called `THE PULL OF THE LAND` and was painted by a South African artist called Faith47. (organized by Well and Good Art Collective http://www.wellandgood.ca/ )

OMG haha. Well if anything, this thread has taught me that there is still a lot I don't know about the world.

^ Out of curiosity, what is the right name for graffiti style art that is commissioned? Also thanks for the links. I really enjoyed learning a bit about the artist's background. I didn't realize that street art was such a male dominated hobby, and its cool that she's making waves with her own art.

Thanks! Next time I head down to Toronto, which admittedly is probably going to be a long time from now since I'm heading to Ottawa for school, I might check it out.
