Probably selling it, since registration is a pain in the ass in Ohio:

Option 1: Historic plates for a vehicle 25 years or older (not eligible)
Option 2: RV conversion with two key factors: a place to cook and a place to sleep, plus less than 20% of the original paint ($$$, plus it requires taking out seats which I really don't want to do)
Option 3: Church bus (requires a CDL)
Option 4: Party bus ($$$ plus even more $$$ for insurance and state inspections)
Option 5: Commercial registration for private use (~$350 for plates)

I was originally going to enter it in a bus race at the local dirt track, but it's in too nice shape for that. Needs new brakes but doesn't really have any other pressing issues.

I always had this thought of making the rear of the bus open up (but keeping it fairly stock looking at the same time) so you could park a race car inside, then make the remaining space into living quarters.

I helped a friend remove all of the seats from a school bus when I was in high school with only hand tools. Was a tedious day.

From what I've seen, most race car haulers don't really leave enough space in front for any respectable living quarters. Now, a mobile post-race watering hole is a different story.

I haven't had the pleasure of removing seats myself, but from what I've heard it is a choice between getting under the bus and taking care of some crusty-ass bolts or taking an angle grinder to the seat attachments on the interior. So many buses have rotten floors yet are perfectly rust-free on the outside. Mine aren't quite rotten but there is some worrisome corrosion on some of the seat attachments.

A few months ago I had the pleasure of wading through moldy seats that had been sliced off during fire department training in order to get the back window out of a scrapyard bus. The whole operation was seedy as hell, but we did get the window out intact.

The wagon and I packed a few bags and moved 2000km across the province almost a year ago now, and one of the new adventures I've gotten to experience here is ice roads.

This is the last winter I'll be driving this car, so I'm glad I got to take it out a few times. Whenever the lockdown ends, it'll be making its final trip back across the province when I go home to get the rest of my stuff.

Tacoma for now, possibly a 4Runner in a year or two. Sucks to give up the wagon life after 11 years.

Definitely, but I'd sure as hell take a Tacoma or 4Runner!

Our wagon is getting a little tired as well, 750,000 on it so really weird things are starting to go wrong. Probably also being replaced by a Toyota when the time comes.

I can get a really good deal on a used Tacoma, otherwise I would go to the local Toyota here who has the 4Runner I want in stock. We already have a truck, so I think a 4Runner would be good to have with enclosed cargo space, but I am not keen on dropping the cash right now.

The wagon stranded me last week, another wiring issue. It’s running again but I just don’t trust it enough up here. Basically once you leave town you’re out of cell service. We do a fair amount of adventuring that does require 4WD so it would be nice to have something a bit smaller than a full sized truck as well, but it’s going to hurt getting used to the fuel economy.

I’ll just have to get a project VW eventually.

I’m also not interested in driving a couple of hours one way for service, so Subaru/VW are both out for vehicles.

More power in that would be terrifying! It feels like it's going to fall over when it's sitting still.

i've seen one of these with a hyabusa (sp?) bike engine in it on a hillclimb course. Of course it was made a bit wider and far wider tires at each corner than this specimen.

Friday is new truck day!

It'll be a couple of weeks shy of exactly 11 years that I've been driving a TDI wagon. This week's project is to get the wagon posted for sale. It's very bitter-sweet.

I didn't even get to be the last person to drive it. After I got it running (again), my boyfriend decided to take it for a rip around the block (having never owned a VW and not understanding what a risky maneuver that was...), as soon as he pulled into the road it died. Again. It had to be dragged home by our ATV. Unfortunately neither of us had our phones with us, because it would've made for a good last photo.

So if anyone wants to give a 5spd ALH wagon a good home...
