The buildings were unfortunately empty in this new Steeltown location, but plenty of clashing colours and the constant battle between light & shadows pressing into one another made it an interesting place to shoot. A thick smell of creosote permeates the air inside, especially when paired up with stifling summer heat. Numerous raccoons scurry throughout the buildings, which I always find a welcome sign; they at least give you an indication that there probably haven't been any humans around recently.

I was a little bit confused when I looked at the fan in the above photo and found it full of rocks. Later though, going through the rest of my photos, it began to make sense. This building backs onto a rail line that - I think - sees a lot of pedestrian traffic. I can just imagine some group of kids scooping rocks up off the line one afternoon and whipping them onto the roof of the building trying to score a shot right into the black chasm of the open fan vent. Maybe they even did this when the building still had power and the blades were whirring away.

I'd like to see this location in winter, with big, heaping piles of snow inside from the vents and drifting in from all the open holes. There is plenty of information in this post to get out there and find this place.

Some wonderful pictures. My favorite of the set is pic three. Love the lighting and the sharpness of the broken glass. I bet the glass is sharp to touch too.

I have to be careful with doors like that one - I have a bad habit of pressing on the glass to open such doors instead of using the push pads. It got me in real hot water once at another location when my hand went right through the hole and got sliced up just shy of needing stitches.

It was slow going in there. Had to creep along inch by inch because I accidentally forgot my flashlight on my front doorstep when I left in the morning.

Love the "Seeing Stars"

That was a real surprise for me too... a result of long exposure on tiny pin-pricks of light. I didn't even see the effect until checking out the pics at home on my computer. I've tried to plan for the star patterns to happen before and failed. It is so much better when it is unexpected.
