| | | My take on the familiar semi-circular facility < on 3/11/2017 3:35 AM > | Reply with Quote
| | | This is a fairly familiar place that I thought I would add my take on. I would think most people familiar with this area would have seen and heard the story, but who knows. At one point this place was used by the railroad company for train repairs. After the rail yard was dismantled, it was used as a warehouse company during the 50's until it was left over a decade ago. There are only 2 remaining in the area and this is the largest in the state. It now pulls up as a tourist attraction on a search engine. 1. The rails are still actively used to park 2. 3. 4. This was a pretty large and open warehouse 5. That guy may have been at the hospital down the road 6. My favorite part of this place was the skylights and I imagined 100 years ago planning that out for the technicians working to have light most of the day. The design was to allow the maximum length of time that the sun would pass through during the day. 7. There were some cool shadows and beams of light as well 8. There were some interesting pieces that you don't get most other locations. Good or bad, somebody put some work and thought into this. 9. 10. 11. "High Class Fight" 12. From one of the building in the rear. I could,t really understand what that was saying. There are ongoing efforts to save this building from destruction, but I have not seen any updates from them recently.

| | | Posted by Chicosan I really enjoyed that place. Found it interesting, and the thought of the trains being in there at one point, very neat. Agree with the design and lighting, pretty cool. Personally, don't care much for random spray can tagging,(penis', pentagrams, eat this or suck that) but do enjoy some artful graffiti, and that place does have some nice pieces! Don't hold me to it, but believe the last pieces were Moist and Daze ??? Very nice shots!
| Thanks! You are probably correct on the names. They are everywhere. Posted by Sheavy It used to be fairly uncommon to come across graffiti like that around bham, even places like this that have been open and easily accessible for years and years, there's only a few places I can remember seeing that were an exception. Unfortunately it's become more and more frequent... almost all of that graffiti there is one, one and a half years old or less...
| It does seem that way. There are only 2 or 3 of the pieces in my photos that I thought were cool, but would be much cooler somewhere else. These shots are about 6 months old, and I have not made it back lately. Hopefully one day the graffiti will get better, but I'm not sure if it will. I seem to remember the "You are Beautiful" deal in the news and remember the city was going after people.

Well the color saturation (if I'm saying the technical term right) is what grabs me - the intensity and vibrancy makes me keep looking at it. I'm still learning why I like certain pictures, but I think I'm trying to apply the rules of science and engineering to art and that's probably an impossibility. Regardless - its a truly engaging shot! Any story you can share about the place or your explore?
| Thanks again! So, I did change the vibrance, saturation and a few other things slightly on #11. The green plastic on the windows were throwing a green cast all over the image, and I lowered the saturation of the green so that I could add some vibrance overall. Vibrance only affects the mid-tones and helped because the green and yellow was pretty harsh. I am not sure about the art aspect, but in photography there are plenty of rules and technical areas. I have a technical background and that sometimes guides my photography. It has not been very long for me since I picked back up a camera and have only been editing my photos for about a year, so it's always good to hear feedback. I am still learning also, and plan to learn as much and as long as possible. As far as the explore and building, I'm still trying to find my comfort level on what to discuss on the public side of this forum. This is building is pretty well known, has a wiki, and tons of info already online. It was built round to service locomotives for the railroads, and has the "celestial windows" to help with illumination(which was one of my favorite parts). This is one of only 2 left in the city, the largest in the state, and was built in the early 1900's. There was a group of people interested in cameras that I met with, and this was agreed to be a great spot for photos. This is probably the only place that the graffiti added something rather than being annoyed by it, but as stated above it has only been like that for a year or so. Overall, this was pretty much wide open area and there was the obstacle of a train parked around most of it. I am still a little hesitant because I would hate to see this place end up going downhill in the future, and if someone thinks this is too much, I can change it. Learning is part of the fun for me! Hope this was helpful, and not too much info.
