My first computer (1981) was an CP/M, S-100 bus based system called a Northstar Horizon. It had a 4MHz Z80 processor (8-bit), 64K of memory, and 2 338K 5-1/4 hard-sectored floppy drives. This computer was connected to a Televideo 910 terminal via a 9600-baud serial link. The other serial port was connected (initially) to a 300-baud Applecat acoustic modem, later replaced by a Hayes Smartmodem 1200.

Wow, for the day, that sounds like a stellar computer.

Yeah, it was a pretty-decent piece of kit.

I bought a slightly-used Kaypro II in 1984 - like the Northstar, it was a Z80 based CP/M machine with two floppy drives, but in an all-in-one box with a handle on it (I hesitate to call it portable). I ran a whole accounting and billing system for a radio station written in dbaseII on it. Quite a machine in its day. I still have it, and it probably still runs.

I remember those... they followed up after the success (?) of the (in)famous Osborne computers... they basically had a better design than the Osborne and a fairly good software bundle.

I remember reading some time ago that Adam Osborne died at his sister's in India--he had been ill for some time after having suffered multiple strokes. If it hadn't been for Adam Osborne, laptop computers might not have existed. He broke the ground and essentially created an entirely new market.

My first ever computer was a Sinclair ZX Spectrum +2a with 128K of RAM, however I tend to think of my first *real* machine as my Mac Performa 5200. It had a 75MHz PowerPC 603 processor and came with 800MB of storage and 16MB of RAM, but by the time I upgraded I had maxed out the RAM at 64MB and upgraded the HD to a 1Gb drive. It ran Mac OS 8.1 for most of it's life.

My first computer was a good old Commodore 64. The good old days of green screens (even when it crashed, it would not bluescreen) I think my uncle got it for me, surplus from the phone company. I really dont remember though, since this was over 12 years ago.

Hey, I got a TRS-80 Model I in my closet, but it really wasn't the "Model I" since it was the only model at the time; it's just a "TRS-80". In fact, it's the only computer I've ever bought, unless you count cell phones or PDA's as computers. Actually, I do consider my PDA a computer, but yeah, the Radio Shack is the only computer I've ever bought. Currently using a work issued IBM tp A31p and am surrounded by all kinds of machines containing embedded systems.

Apple IIc from 1984 with a Commodore colour monitor (they were cheaper than Apple's). Eventually "upgraded" it to 1 MB of ram before switching to the PC world in 1990.

The first computer that I used regularly was a Commodore 128 owned by my friend. We wrote some crappy games, everyone has at some point or another... hooray for BASIC!

The first computer I actually owned was an Amiga 500. Ran off of floppies until we bought a massive external hard drive.

Amiga rocks. There's nothing like playing the original Lemmings, with cheesy MOD music and everything. And Dragon's Lair/Space Ace.

And you get the best crash screen ever. http://www.guru-meditation.net/
