Tacos are great trucks!

This summer I'll be completing an off-roading 101 course in a 2013 Taco. I was passenger last year, but this year I'll be driving. It kept up with the Jeeps through rock crawling, water crossings, etc. There was only one or two -really- steep rock faces that we didn't try as the Taco doesn't have lockers. Only mangled the skid plate a little bit, but that's what it's there for.

Getting a brand new frame on my '09 Tacoma because it failed a recall rust inspection test... was hoping I'd break 300,000 miles (I'm at 224k right now), feeling pretty confident I will now ;)

i'm surprised they didn't buy the truck back. That's what they did with a guy I worked with... they bought his Tundra back due to a rotted frame. He ended up buying a new GMC Sierra.

They offered to, and I had a '96 Tacoma that was recalled back in '08 that they gave me 8 grand for (it had over 200,000 miles, wasn't 4x4, worth maybe 1 grand in KBB, so a great deal), but in this situation, I had bought it like 2 years prior for 15 grand.

They only offered me 11, I told them to either give me 15 grand in credit to buy a new truck from them directly, or fix it. They refused to give me anything more than 11, thus, the fix

That's epic.

Everyone I knew was pushing me to get the 6 cylinder... I don't tow but do offroad a couple times per year, so figured the 4 cylinder made more sense.

Will I ever need a snorkel? No.

Should I get one, just in case? Most definitely.

My Cruze surpassed 121,000 miles last night. Should I be afraid? I can't get a new car right now, or ever.

in kind of a position I have never been in before, honestly.
Opinions?

i got over 180 000miles out of my 2.4l sunfire... on its original head gasket. one of my 3.8l grand prix had about 200 000miles when i sold it, its still on the road 2 years later. Its all in how you maintain it. and knowing how you maintain a car... you could probably make it last forever

Sweet. That recall had to hurt Toyota. I've even seen them doing replacements down here.

my buddy in mass has a 2 month wait with the dealer... dealer is putting these on the back burner because he has a small shop and the frame swap uses 2 bays for 2 days

On that note, holy fuck is it ever hard to find a 4 door, 4x4, V6 manual Taco.

Shelling out $44k on a new one just isn't gonna happen. I'd buy an 8 year old Porsche and another 20 year old Ranger!

How hard is it to import US cars in? Plenty rust free examples down here in the south east.

Dammit Julie, I had my heart set on a Wrangler as my next vehicle for adventuring, and then you had to go and post about the Taco. And now that I've done some looking at it, I'm pretty sure I'll be going for a Taco once the Corolla dies (ie. never... the Corolla gives zero fucks)

Don't wait until the Corolla dies, just get a Taco as a second vehicle. They're not the worst on gas, but definitely still go through it so the Corolla would be handy for puttering around

You've seen the Expedition Overland series right? They use a 2013 Taco for the Alaska/Yukon trek, as well as the South America one.

well, at 133,000 miles the rear brakes are done-zo. The drivers side rear is hanging so badly, I thought it was going to catch fire. Bought shoes, drums and the hardware kit. My dad thinks one of the shoes came apart, but I think the shoes are so far out, they cocked sideways. Well you pull up on the ebrake, there is just spring tension on it... I yanked up on it at 40mph... nothing. So, Wednesday will see what's broke.

if you bought the 2LT RS, LTZ or LTZ RS, you had rear disc brakes... everything is 1965 all over again on the back.

I had a panic stop a couple of weeks ago... Fido ran out in front of me on a dark corner coming into the center... I stopped hard and that's when things started hanging. You could feel the brake snap free when you backed up, but I think they're so far out now, they moved sideways or something. Never had a brake hang on me since I started driving. Weird.

The shoe could have shed its material. I've had that happen.

my dad said that, too... today, after I washed the car, I headed into the village to get some carbonated joy in a cardboard box and the brake had released. Like an idiot, when I pulled up to the store, I pulled parking brake... yep, brake hung again. Got in the car tonight, brake had released. So there lays my problem. Car is getting new stoppers tomorrow afternoon.

Frustrating they still use rear drums currently. I get it back in the day but the process is so cheap manufacturing wise I can't think disc add that much to the total cost.

went to my appointment today... the brakes in the back are barely worn. The parking brake cable is fucked. Had to order them from the dealer for $23 a piece... the catch? the backseat has to come out, carpet rolled forward and the console pulled up, semi-out to change them. (facepalm)

I don't get it. But then again with the harsher winters you get maybe that's the life span of a. Parking cable there lol
