Get In Before It's Gone....

This Guelph beauty is on its way to being torn down. I recommend anyone who has driven by to get in while you can. The demolition signs have been up for over a year but when I drove by last week trucks were on the property and a yellow garbage schute was out the window. I read that it is being torn down for highway expansion. Not the best photos, as these were taken quickly on the way to work, but a real shame this gem will be demo'd in short order.

Consider me shocked... I was under the impression that it was being sold off and moved. Considering how hard the city worked to keep the address out of public knowledge... Hopefully it isn't a full demolition and they are just clearing it out so they can move it elsewhere. The house is 153 years old!

The city had the opportunity to declare it a historically significant location, and from my research they had every indication that it DID qualify. However they decided a "full investigation and subsequent report would take too long" and declined to take any action. It broke my heart, since the house is so beautiful - and to be demolished for a highway extension?!

I still have yet to do a proper write up for the location, but it's a work in progress.

The sign was put up when they demolished the barn out back, it's been there ever since. If you go there be prepared to get caught and charged. Security walks through several times a day and the MTO tends not to be forgiving.

Is this a newer thing? I went there 3x this summer and nobody said anything. It was left unlocked and unboarded for the majority of the summer.

Not sure how new the security is, I was warned by a friend about it who talked to the guards.

I've kept close eye on this place over the last couple months and it seems consistently plowed after every snowfall. I haven't once seen security in or visiting but I suspect this is partially why the are keeping the property semi maintained.

Skye_Ann, I was under the same impression as you that the property was to be saved because of its historical significance. What a shame to see such a beautiful stone house leveled. I drove by yesterday in the late evening. All surrounding trees have been removed and to be honest the place looked hella creepy on the hillside all alone, the sun setting on the edge of the horizon. Should have had my good camera with me.

Welcome to Ontario. If it has historical value, it'll probably get demolished.

House has apparently been partially demolished as of yesterday, starting with the back portion and moving forward. Looks like nothing is being saved from this old beauty.

153 years, gone for a "highway expansion". Ugh.

So it would seem.
Imagine the amount of man hours that were consumed to build that.
It could have been reused... it looked rock solid*, no pun intended.

It was gorgeous inside with a slate chalkboard in one of the rooms, custom staircase hand made, and an amazing arched doorway both on the exterior and repeated on the inside. They didn't save a fucking thing aside froma few stones, presumably to make some cairn memorial to the atrocity...not a single interior solid wood door was even saved. It's another disgusting display by the MTO par for the course. It was left unlocked for over a year allowing vandals to smash the windows and interior to decay rapidly. There was no chance for it to be purchased, it was all a a lie.

I'm gonna vomit. I feel so nauseous. It was a beautiful old home, and it was ENTIRELY salvagable.

Has anyone checked out the third of the 3 properties that were left vacant? Two blocks up? I'm sure it's demolished or will be soon but I haven't seen photos from it yet.

I've noticed a lot of younger adults today would rather have a new modern piece of shit house than a well build older house, one that was built by true craftsmen.
I don't understand that degree of stupidity/ineptness at all.

The one house with some local historical ties is still there and hasn't changed, maybe purchased, who knows. The property it's on seems to be active still and cared for somewhat. It's locked tight, newer locks and some boarding. The other house I don't know if it's still there. I drove out there in the summer and there were a lot of people milling about, looked like normal people not in uniform. All the outbuildings had been torn down though.

I hear you, these days it's all about sardine can living and the open concept inside to forget you live in a sardine neighborhood with no land, trees or privacy. You have to pay a lot more to have a home with any character, and half the foundations crack and leak. The really disgusting part though is the choices people DON'T have with the MTO nazi regime. If they want your land there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. You're forced off by LAW! Here's a link to one such disgusting display when the MTO had police evict Tony (90) and Gaida(88) Kapostin when they expropriated their home by force in 2013. Tony stood his ground telling the police to shoot him in his doorway if they wanted him out. The couple just wanted to live out their twighlight years on their farm, where they had lived for 50 years. They lost that battle. Unbelievable.

Having just bought a well built, older house... jesus christ is it ever cold! I've developed a lot of respect for insulation.

As Bob Dylan once said...

So I'm Going,
I'm Just Going,
I'm Gone.

A real shame but I did catch a photo mid demo.
