Lens opinion (Not UE sorry)

I searched first, I promise.

I have a thing coming up soon that I will be taking photos at, a film festival. Its three days, indoors, outdoors, day time, night time and I was looking to rent a lens for the event that could somewhat cover all my needs.

I am leaning towards the Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS. On paper it seems to be a good all around lens. I do wish it was faster however.

Anyway, thought I would ask here to see if anyone had any real life experience with it, or could recommend something that might fit my needs more.

Thanks in advance.

You'll probably want a faster lens but you can make it work.

There will be some rough spots but it’s doable. Stabilization will help a lot, but you’ll probably still end up running ISO in the 2000+ range at points. Bracing yourself and/or the camera will help a ton if you can do it. That or get away with bringing a monopod with you.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a usable lens, it just has tradeoffs like everything else. Your superzooms have decent distortion that can be fixed in post, etc.

Personally I’ve considered it a lot when I end up carrying around my ‘holy trinity set.’ A superzoom is a lot handier than a 14-24mm, 24-70mm, and 70-200mm all f/2.8 lenses.

If this is hired work, I wouldn’t do it without a backup camera IMO. Keep a shorter lens like a 24-70mm f/2.8 (or even a 50mm f/1.8 or equivalent) on one camera and a 70-200mm f/2.8 on the other. But that’s also why you see serious outfits bringing in second shooters, etc.

Spot on. Save yourself money and aggravation, buy the right lens the 1st time.
Get fast glass...
The 28-300 is too slow and has too wide a range to expect much in image Q.
The bokeh will suffer terribly as well.
The 70-200 f/2.8 IS is Canon's -best- zoom, get it.
On a wide frame cam all you really need is a 24-70L and a wide lense to form a complete all around high Q shooting set. You could get by on a wide frame with only the 24-70L and the 70-200L.

That lens ought to do the trick... but if you're picky on quality, I'd get the 24-70 f/2.8L as well as the 70-200 f/2.8L. You can always rent them if you're not sure you want to commit.

I get a lot of good pictures with a 70-300 mm lens that came with my camera. It can go from macro shots to distance pretty easily. A 35mm prime lens comes in pretty handy too. I have quite a bit of fun with fish eye too.

Whenever I can only use one lens for a job, it's a 24-105 f4. But that's because the company I work for is cheap, and I do videos with controlled lighting, not stills in natural light (or lack of light). But the image quality is great, and the zoom is super versatile without making the lens enormous.

I used the 28-300 once a year or 2 ago and I really enjoyed it, but there's probably a better lens for your needs. 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 is always a good combo, but it may be a bit pricey. Using a 24-105 as a main lens and a 50 1.8 could be a cheaper alternative, but you'd be much more limited than if you used the 24 and the 200. If your body has good low light and you don't wanna have to switch lenses then the 28-300 would be good, and probably the most fun to use out of any of the other lenses.
Hope this helps and good luck.
