How often,do you bring a pocket knife as a utility? Is it worth bringing? Could you get in trouble if you caught with one on you? Would anyone consider it a necessity?

I carry one at all times, regardless of what setting. ive just been accustomed to carrying one everywhere. I just carry a Swiss army knife and I've never gotten in trouble because I've had it on me. However, I'm sure you could...

I carry a small K-Bar folder with me at all times, if I'm exploring I probably also have a multitool in a pocket of my bag.

Each jurisdiction will have it's own rules on how long a knife is "allowed" to be before it's an issue, so you'll have to look those up on your own, but it's also the kind of thing that's going to be up to the officer's discretion (potentially in both directions) if it were to come up.

As you mentioned, it's a tool. I think the most mine has ever been used for is to pry calcified old coins/keys/trinkets/bullets out of old brick drains, but I carry it in case I need it. I make sure to always mention it if I have an encounter with a cop and it's never been an issue.

I personally don't bring one as I've never run into an occasion where it was needed and it has the possibility of complicating encounters with cops, but it's a matter of personal discretion.

Can't you open carry a sword in TX now? In any case, I have a knife that folds up to be the size of a credit card, so I can put it in my wallet. It comes in handy pretty often, so I recommend it to everyone who asks.

I've had mine for years now, and it is surprisingly durable.

Yeah, they legalized carry of blades over 5 inches. I don't think a LEO would be very fond of the guy taking pictures of an abandoned building with a greatsword on his back.

A pocket knife is a pocket knife. If you're talking about carrying a great sword or dagger or something that is entirely different. I don't think any cop of reasonable mind would give you issues over a small pocket knife as they are carried by everybody.

If a cop is of the mind to give you issues over having a small pocket knife he is going to give you issues over something regardless.

You know I used to carry one; never used it for actual exploring purposes beyond cleaning under my nails after a day out. Forgot about and left it at security when flying about a year ago. Haven't missed it really.

Still wish I could have pliers and a screw driver but won't be tempting fate unless I have to (seriously could escape from most places if I were locked in with those).

Depending on your state you can be charged with armed trespass if you carry a blade. Of course the size and perceived purpose, along with your location, all come into effect with this sort of thing.

I would assume they aren't too strict here in Texas about pocket knifes, but it's better to find out than to just assume. Especially if have stuff like a camera to prove your reasons for being there to be innocent.

I have been carrying a blade in Milwaukee for 20+ years. It is a tool to me, not a weapon. It is amazing how many times a day it comes out and I feel completely naked without it. I have never had it taken from me, even when pulled over. It is a 3" blade. Local law is 2.5" max. I have a number of cops in the family, and at the end of of the day they say "legal or not, if a cop wants to take it, they will take it". Of course if it was a legal blade, you would get it back, but it might be a couple weeks before it was available to you. If you were caught with a legal blade and received a trespassing ticket, they will for certain take it and you may never get it back. Keep in mind these are my local laws, as understood from family members on the MPD force....

I always bring my Leatherman Wave. It's a great tool that's come in handy plenty of times, though I've never had to use either of the knives on it. The vast majority of times I've used it have been for the pliers, wire-cutters, or screwdriver.

I love my leather man too, but have never gotten used to carrying it. Too bulky for my pocket, and I don't like anything hanging on my belt. My knife is ALWAYS in my front right pants pocket, regardless of pant style and where I am going. Leather Man does come on explores though, in my pack....

I was forced to throw a $100 Snap-On/Ken Onion blade away at a Bucks game once when I entered the arena. Forgot to leave it in the car, too far to walk back, my boy wanted to catch tip-off. Was later told by my cop bro-in-law who works in evidence I should have handed to the cop at the door and asked him to send to officer "name here" at district "x" evidence lock up, and I probably would have gotten it back. He said 80% chance..... The other 20% are either a-holes or have no idea who my bro is....

Often wonder if the leather man could be considered a "burglary tool".....

Yeah, it is kinda awkward to carry around and the case it comes with is pretty shitty, but I love it nonetheless.

And damn, that's rough. I get pretty attached to tools/knives I've had for a long time, so I don't know if I could've done that. This makes me feel like I should go out of my way to befriend some cops, though.

And probably any cop in a decent mood would realize that its not that uncommon or nefarious to carry around a multitool, but it definitely has come in handy for breaking into places for me. I kinda feel like a multitool would set off fewer red flags for a police officer, since its seen as less of a weapon. I have no clue though, as I've never had any run-ins with police.

Stay tuned. Meeting cop bro-in-law for cocktails tonight. I will ask him what the general consensus is on multi-tools, as they are def becoming more common... I will guess it is ok on your belt. In your pocket it becomes a concealed weapon. But the real question is: if caught exploring, is it a burglary tool?

I'll post an answer Thursday morning....

In my area at least, it's not uncommon for people to carry multi-tools or swiss army knives with them wherever they go. However, where you place it on your body matters more. I'd recommend having a small satchel pouch or light bag that won't be encumbersome for medical supplies, water, and your multi-tool.

There's no purpose at least in my eyes to bring anything larger than that of a Leatherman or something along that, it depends on which state you're in America but if you bring a K-bar or something along those likes here it's just asking for trouble..

Cop bro says it is ultimately up to the arresting officer, but a multi tool could be considered a concealed weapon if in your pocket or bag. You could also be charged with possession of a burglary tools if you are caught at a location that has a history of break-ins and vandalism....

Of course, this is a Milwaukee cop - but I would bet the law is fairly similar in most places....
