Street drift and "Underground" car community?

Last Friday, some friends and I hosted a night we've been preparing for weeks and never thought it would've been as successful as it turned out...

Toronto has a relatively large car community, but within those lay a more "Underground" car scene. Some Instagramer has been hosting small and private night time car meets where the main subject was drifting and sliding around. Those were taking place in a warehouse parking lot deep in Pickering... They weren't all that big until our crew came along and did some advertisement of our own to help the movement take place. After a few months of shenanigans, a bigger and better crew from Detroit saw what we were doing and wanted to collab with us and make what we were doing bigger, and better...

One thing to another, we found a multitude of locations and an intersection where we could take place. After weeks of self-made advertisements, the night came to be... At least 300 people showed up during our first location and ~100 found their way to the next location!! Unfortunately the cops were waiting for us so we quickly moved to the final location of the night without even being followed! ~100 found their way there once again (lots of DMs)...

I made a video of that night, but I'd also like to get your perspectives on this, we got a lot of hate from other car crews all throughout the social medias. But as us, a community who in most cases breaks the laws as a hobby, what do YOU guys think? Did we go too far?

EDIT: We made the news in Toronto and we're currently being investigated...

I feel like that would bring a lot of unwanted bad attention to the car scene. There aren't even any amazing cars, it looks like a bunch of new shit you see in mall parking lots in Mississauga.

Okay, here's my beef now that I am awake enough to form a sentence. A few years ago, some friends and I started a little "Cars and coffee" type thing... more of a "Cars and cheeseburgers" but whatever. Started off as 3 or 4 of us, and ended up being close to 20 of us in the end. Mostly VWs but there were a few Miatas, a Cobalt, an SRT-4 and other stuff, too. We had permission to meet at the local A&W every other tuesday, hang out for an hour or two, have a burger, chat about cars and leave. No burnouts, no revving, just being respectful car enthusiasts.

One meet, some hick driving a worn out Dodge Ram shows up at about 7:00 PM, sees these god damned imports, and starts doing donuts to prove he's the alpha male with his $700 truck, and leaves. The owner of a business in the same plaza called the cops on us, because obviously the idiot has something to do with us, since he's doing automotive things! The cops show up, lecture us all, and we lost our meetup spot because of some dirtbag who probably couldn't even read.

So yeah, these irresponsible morons are ruining it for the rest of us and I hope the police catch up with them.

Yeah... That's the problem and the feedback we've been getting a lot. People that aren't car guys will generalize all car folks and that's why the other car crews are mad at us. It directly affected everyone else in a negative way.

Although I'm in a sense "proud" of what we accomplished, I do feel sorry for affecting the whole community and making all of us look bad... By doing that, we also effectively split everyone in 2 and that's not something I personally was expecting nor I'm I happy with...

you're not going to please everyone.
personally, I don't see anything wrong with what you're doing and here's why... guys with cars have been doing shit like you're doing since probably the 50's. It's nothing new. It's just now we live in a hypersafe world where anything outside the norm is bad.

Personally, and this my opinion alone, what I saw in the vid wasn't car guys but people with too much bloody money aping what they have seen in other different videos over the past 18 years. The sad part is that car culture is changing, dying almost.

I admire your planning and dedication to something that means a lot to you, but you have to admit that there are people out there that aren't going to get it or understand it.

I don't go to car shows or cruise in's anymore because it's not about the amount of love, dedication or craft you have in your car anymore... it's about how much money you spent. This video, in some ways, echoes that distaste I have for the car scene over the past six or seven years.

I get what you mean, but it doesn't feel like a flex battle or at least money wise. It feels we're just showing our love a different way, most of the guys against us are all saying things like "take it to the track". Problem is, not everyone has the money to spend to get at the track then pay another 30-40$$ to get in. Also it's 2 hours away from DT Toronto... That means you have to book a full day off to play with restrictions around noone that actually cares...

Where as on the other hand, this was a Friday night meet in a local place, most people are done their work and needs to decompress... Instead of doing drugs or going to clubs to get fucked up, they drive 15-20 minutes at most, to gather around a crowd of enthusiasts to do what we all enjoy, sliding around at no admission price...

The love is definitely still with us around here, we carried a jack and some stands so that when people pop their tires, we could help them get back into it or ride back home with a spare set they would have. Poeple would cheer in joy when a car would be sliding past them... When a really good driver would get on the pad, the growd would be hyped to see him perform. It was like a concert expect it would be for criminals only so whoever wasn't into it would be snitching around...

Everyone who went there had a blast to see what the boys had built in their garage, slide around. That guy in the grey Corvette C5 had no idea what he was doing in the first few times we saw him, some other guy who drives an IS300, thought him a lot and over the weeks he got better. He eventually got his rear end up on a curb but we were all there to help him free up.

All in all I do believe that there's still love in this community. Althought, yes people are getting a bit too hypersafe. This is most likely only be a yearly even anyways (publicly). People have been hosting street racing and haven't had any problems, but these same people are also complaining about the takeovers.
