i've never sold a car in a private sale before... i've actually never had a car i've had to sell (always drove them into the ground & parted them out...)

my very elderly neighbor has a '05 camry he gave me for $800. just failed inspection, but just needs a new front tire & tailpipe. possibly a front tie-rod. bringing it to my trusted guy to confirm this is it's status.

with only 120,000 miles, i'm finding it's private sale value is around $3000 - $4000 once i get a valid inspection sticker.

has anyone here succeeded in selling a car on craigslist? or brought a car to a used car lot and sold it on consignment or something?

my hunch is i'm going to have to put about $500 - $800 into it to pass inspection, but a little worried about actually selling it...

in ideal world, if it's ready to sell for $1300 at my cost, if i could sell it for $3000, i'd be thrilled. am i overestimating how difficult it might be to sell?

I tried selling my 2000 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon on craigslist and facebook… if you fix the car, you're never going to get your money back out of it, at least in my experience.

I sell cars for a living,

just put the basic jobber parts which should be cheap if you shop around and get it passed saftey,

best place i find to sell cars is facebook. craigslist is a lot of sniffers and time wasters.

If you can ROI 500-800 profit thats not bad

Yep hitting up the junkyard for the tie rod & tire... no experience tinkering with exhaust systems & have a buddy who works at a muffler shop, he said they should be able to get a new exhaust pipe on there for like $250.

So bought it for $800, putting down a max of $700 to get inspection ready, If I can sell it for $2000 I'll be content, but based on what I'm seeing other people sell these for, I think I should be able to get $2800, if not more.

My first course of action is to try and just sell it as is, for $1500. I'll gladly take $700 net profit for zero work.

If no interest, then I'll fix it up, then try to sell again while using as a commuter car... I drive about 1k miles per month for work and sick of getting like 18 MPG on the tacoma...

So the worst case scenario is I have another car I can hang on to and use a second car, and eventually trade it in... which isn't ideal, but not the end of the world, I suppose.

I paid $1500 for my Subie.. put tires, timing set, exhaust, tune up, brakes front and rear and bought a catalytic converter for it. Tried getting $1500 for it... nothing. I ended up letting it go for $850 just to get it out of my driveway. reason I heard most? oh, it's a manual shift. no thanks. The whole reason I bought it was BECAUSE it was a 5speed. People are just lazy mouthbreathers.

sam - that doesn’t surprise me. when i bought my truck, had a sexy 2 door civic SI in manual in great condition... no interest whatsoever. miraculously my brother totalled it & i cashed the insurance check & didn’t look back. me personally? this camry is the first auto transmission i’ve ever owned, and likely my last.

so the state said it's going to take 10 - 14 weeks to get the new title, and i can't sell it until then. jesus friggin christ.

on the plus side, the tailpipe & tie rod are totally fine and this geezer was lied too by the local shit tire shop.

so $800 for the car, $80 for new tire, $150 to register it (so i can get the new inspection sticker)... as long as I can net $500 i'll be jazzed. honestly think i should be able to sell it for at least $2,500 and make a grand if i'm patient... thanks folks!

Selling my Ranger was the worst experience I've had yet, apparently sub $1k Rangers attract all the lowbreeds.

I learned the fine art of buying used cars person to person from my father, grandfather and uncles in the days of newspaper classified ads...so if you got someone on the phone asking dumb questions, you raise the price or hang up...
