Tips for parking

I have been exploring for quite a while but I am fairly new to the site.
Anyways, the biggest problem I always seem to have is parking my car when I get to a location. I normally park in the closest parking lot but sometimes that can be quite a hike, not that I mind, but I am just wondering if anyone has any better suggestions?

The hike in and out is half the adventure for me!

On YouTube I seen people hide there automobiles in long grass, on the side of the road a little bit away and even in the building!

my favorite way is to hike to the place even if my friend doesn't want to. :p

I usually park a few streets away. That being said, when exploring in bad neighborhoods, I try not to park too far away from the location I am checking out (such as a ways up the street), that way I can keep an eye on my vehicle.

Depends! The hike is great some of the time (rural) but I'm a huge practitioner of the park it right in front approach when possible**

**i do not endorse this method as it carries great risk and must be used with caution

Don't get towed.
And don't get it stolen.

And don't leave the hood up so it looks like it's broken down; things under the hood may go missing.

Best to find a large parking lot being used and blend in. Or legal street parking.
If you're parked too obviously near a hot site the police may be waiting for you... it happen to me at Haverford State hospital.
But since the state cop and me came to an agreement that I was just photographing wildlife he left it slide. He was fixing to tow my car.

Last weekend I parked at the police station in the town I was exploring. It worked out well as one spot was next door, and the other across the street.

Depends. Sometimes I'll park right out front. If someone comes by, I just act like an ignoramus "Oh wow, you don't want people walking around this open building? Okay!" and leave. If it has been made obvious that Trespassers are not allowed, things change. Use of common sense and a solid pair of shoes has taken me far, and to many a location.
P.S. I got all my tips from the Sneakin' Santa cursor.

the Sneakin' Santa cursor.

psh he's strutting for me.

But yea if it is a location where you can play dumb just park close to the site. For more intense locations park far off site to be incognito.

I have a scooter so I can park anywhere. Sometimes I park strategically so I can use it as a stepladder to get over a wall or fence.

I've parked on site in rare instances, but it makes me edgy; even "hiding" the car from easy view seems foolhardy IMO...it won't stop a patrolling LEO (or skulking squatter/scrapper) from finding it. Of these instances I find bolder is better--NOT ideal; while most people are unlikely to pay much attention, and being in view doesn't offer a conveniently unobserved place for someone to take their time stealing your ride, there's always somebody (cop, nosy neighbor, city worker, street cam, ect.) who will possibly connect the dots.
Blackhawk has already stated this (and more succinctly), but yeah, legal public parking is the way to go...and in my experiences at least, there's usually something reasonably close to the site...and a bit of walking can get you aired out and limbered (helps me with those pre-ex jitters), and gives time to do a slower analysis of conditions near the site, without the distraction of driving. Getting busted on site (won't matter if it's an LEO though) is also less likely to connect 'some guy that was walking around but slipped away (or I warned him off)' to a specific vehicle and plate.
Blackhawk, well said in general, in reference to not leaving the hood open, I'd almost add: if you do, might as well turn on your hazards too, if one is going to be fatalistic, may as well do it with a dead battery!
And is it just me or is Ol'Struttin' Santa moving quicker now that he's got his disembodied reindeer with him?

Don't be afraid to hike a mile or two if you have to. Better to walk for a while than returning to find a cop outside your car.

Of course, that's why I endorse bicycles. Easily stashed, more discrete, and can rapidly travel along paths cars can't.

Very true indeed! I like the bicycle idea, too.

While I have not done this yet, but there are a couple places I want to visit in other cities, my plan was to leave my car at the hotel and have uber pick me up and drop me nearby the locations.

Welcome to UER

I've used a bike. Miles are minutes...
Only downside is you need to stash the bike well once there or not leave it out of your sight.
Bikes disappear like magic

Get a good equipment system so gear is easy to carry and get to. Tactical systems like the ones used by soldiers work best.
Research it well before buying... best to try it first.
B&H Photo has more cam equipment in stock than anybody.
Top shelf service, 100% satisfaction guaranteed return policy.

You just have to be aware of how dangerous the site is. If everything goes to shit, its good to be able to get away quickly.
