You just have to be aware of how dangerous the site is. If everything goes to shit, its good to be able to get away quickly.

Don't forget about the possibility of being identified by guards. A couple years ago I had a surprise chat with a sheriff's deputy because some security guards at a site boxed in my car with their trucks so they could send my license plate number to the police and get an officer dispatched to my house with trumped up accusations.

The guards technically didn't have the authority to box me in since I parked in the parking lot of a different business across the street, but that didn't really stop them from following me back to my vehicle in their trucks and doing it anyway. After all, I was caught hiding in a property that had multiple no trespassing signs, and they had every reason to be there.

Cars have license plates that are easy to identify, and can be used to identify you to the cops if the guards or owner is mad enough. There's something to be said for parking some distance away so you can cut through an alley, store, or the woods on foot to shake anybody following you by car before you reach your vehicle.

I usually always try to park where other people park so it looks like my car is suppose to be there. Usually find a nearby business with a parking lot, or street parking by houses by other people's car sand walk to the location im going to.

On one explore I parked in a church parking lot across the street from the site. A neighbor ended up calling the cops on the suspicious parked cars and once they showed up it dawned on me how stupid that was. Ended up getting cuffed and verbally warned not to return to the site for a year.

Best place to park is where your car can blend in and an empty church parking lot at 10pm is not the place. Try a quiet side street and make a short, silent hike to your destination so as not to arouse the attention of residents.

I use to live next to a large church parking lot.
Times of usage were very predictable.
It's easier to call the cops than have your neighbor's become victims.
Worse there was a large Verizon copper to fiber optic relay box there; scrapper/terrorist target.
Parking there got a call every time.

Don't get towed.
And don't get it stolen.

I second this one about getting towed!
Being especially careless one time, I ended up getting towed while in BFE nowhere in a different state with no way to even get my car out of tow before the guy left town for five days. I had to have family wire me cash for a 5 day lodging/storage fee and my roommate had to drive all the way to Oklahoma to come get me. Not my proudest moment and I highly recommend not making the same mistake!

Parking is still one of the top challenges I deal with. I just passed on a place this past weekend because I didn't want to park at the entrance of the location even though there was zero traffic (knowing my luck, the rancher that owned those longhorns further up the property would happen to see my car on his way to Sunday service and decide to exercise his 2nd amendment right on me or my car). There were no other options except park about two miles away and hike. I didn't feel like dealing with the likelihood of at least one good samaritan rolling by and seeing me (it very rural, wide open land) walking and deciding to offer their assistance or ask me where I was going - there was literally nowhere to go that made any sense on foot. Ironically, the location itself is well-concealed with super easy access - two of my favorite things (I'll be back).

I'll end with one final thought:
It has been my experience that [almost] every time I've run into any trouble or gotten caught at a location, it [almost] always had something to do with the vehicle or where it was parked. This is why I [almost] always suck it up and walk the distance or find a way to get really creative with this issue.

Trust me, it really sucks when your parking gives you away!

Parking certainly can vary depending on the environment you are in. Being in Iowa we encounter a lot of small rural towns where I park my truck right next to the property and the neighbors often try to ignore whatever goes on at their "eyesores". Another thing to consider is what your vehicle is, we often checked out a well known dog park in the area that had a construction company storing equipment in the parking lot, I backed my truck right in with the other trucks and the officer passing through on patrol passed right on by! As everybody else has said though, if you're in a more populated area, just opt for the hike.. could be the reason you can get away if shit hits the fan!

My thoughts. It all comes down to the location and the geographic area. I have visited multiple locations and each time, the parking has been different. One hospital I went to was in a rough neighborhood, so I parked across the street at some apartments...lucky for us the POE was only about 100ft from the car and no one seemed to notice. At rural/middle of nowhere locations, I'll usually park on the property and only if the property has a history of cops will I try to hide the vehicle. One abandoned resort I had to do some off-roading in the woods to get park on hiking trail off the main road. In a busy area, I find that parking in a shopping center lot is the best, or a 24hr place. Hardest part about that would be the walk, not because of the distance, but the fact that you MAY be questioned, because people love to be nosy. But you need confidence and to stick to the plan, get there quick and try to not draw attention to yourself.

I have a bike rack on my car if I need to hike in. Then it's a leisurely ride in and I can stash the bike in the building.

I am not a fan of trying to "hide" your car; it essentially proves you knew you were breaking the law and makes you look way more suspicious to law enforcement and concerned neighbors. As others have already said, its best to park somewhere where your vehicle blends in with other vehicles. Or at least somewhere that doesn't draw attention to it or makes it stand out.

In a way, parking right out front has one advantage in that if you are caught you can feign ignorance and potentially talk your way out of the situation. "What?! I can't be here? I just wanted a few pics--beautiful spot, isn't it?--I'll be on my way in that case!"

I've considered using public transportation but never actually tried it. It makes sense in theory but I don't like feeling stranded. At the same time I wouldn't have to worry about my car getting stolen or towed that way so I guess it just depends on what you'd rather worry about lol!

For the majority of my explores I have someone drop me off a short walk from the site. I'm fine with walking a few miles though if it's a good spot. Bikes are great as long as you don't have a nice one and you don't look suspicious on one. A 7' tall guy wearing a big camera bag and a tripod riding a bike sketchily down the sidewalk will probably draw some attention. Ubers are an option to just have them drop you somewhere, but a quick getaway plan is always nice to have. If the place is really urban then there's probably gonna be some legal, or legalish, parking nearby. If it's rural, then parking in front or just off the side of the road could work out fine. It all depends on the spot.

I recommend parking a ways away from the site, but close enough to make a speedy exit if necessary. In my early years of exploring we parked literally in the parking lot of an abandoned asylum that’s on the grounds of a very active new mental health facility. We weren’t inside the building for more than five minutes before one of our party noticed a security truck parked right beside our vehicle. I learned after that night. Don’t drive your car and park beside the abandoned asylum. Or any building for that matter. Fortunately we were able to slip out when the truck left.

Depends! The hike is great some of the time (rural) but I'm a huge practitioner of the park it right in front approach when possible**

**i do not endorse this method as it carries great risk and must be used with caution

mood, i'm a bit of an idiot so I just park in front, but I try to avoid parking in views of a neighbor. If there's a parking lot there though, I'll just park there because I wanna be able to get in the car and leave really fast. Its a terrible idea and you probably shouldn't do it but the only time we ever got any trouble for it I had already driven away before the cop could stop us, because we parked close so we made it to the car before he could pull in. I feel like most people will just assume the car is broke down and you walked to help (at least in the country that is.) Its almost like they think "no one would ever park in broad daylight in a bright red car directly in front of illegal stuff, that'd be ridiculous" and move on. Still a terrible idea for anyone who doesn't have the "i'm a small stupid girl please forgive me" advantage, and probably even then.

*Take public transportation your car cant get stolen or ticketed if they cant find it or see it

*Park your car there for 1 full hour and wait to see if you get asked if you are lost or asked by security to leave. If 1 full hour has elapsed and nothing happened, that spot most likely is safe to explore

*Don't bring expensive cars/items that can be easily stolen (Exploring bad neighborhoods)

*Don't stay there too long especially if you aren't familiar with that area (The locals will notice an unfamiliar car with un familiar group hanging around it.)

*Don't explore all at the same time or explore the same location alll at the same time (The locals are going want to know where those 5-10 different unfamailr cars came from and who they belong to.

Uber.

I have not done this yet, but there are a couple locations that I'm seriously considering giving this method a shot simply is no place to park a car without a lot of risk (and no public transportation).
