I just look and look until I find something abandoned. Usually, signs will be empty/overgrown parking lots and caved roofs. Street view is also very useful to confirm.

There's already plenty of threads about this that go into more detail, but here's the highlights.

- Look for the heavily industrialized and/or poor side of town. Every city has one, though the extent varies. Abandoned buildings are more likely here.

- Follow the rivers and railroad tracks. Both tend to correspond with industrial areas, so your odds are better.

- Look for roof damage, parking lots that are overgrown, cracked, and empty, and broken windows.

While I can and have found several locations via trawling Google Maps on satellite view (and it can be entertaining if you're bored) it's usually more efficient to find locations through other sources (city records, newspaper archives, and rumors) and use Google Maps to verify them.

Pretty much this...

I use Streetview and satellite imagery to verify a location's validity. If something looks the same or increasingly decayed over time, it's probably inactive and safe to check out.

One day I got a good camera.

This for exploring in general, seriously.

That is the method I used to find places in my former small town too. It was a rural area with lots of farm houses. Even there I once had a close encounter with the police. So if in a larger town you do manage to find lots of stuff on the industrial side of town how do you avoid getting caught?

In my experience it can actually be a bit easier in more populous areas. In small towns, the cops don't really have anything better to do. In larger cities, the cops usually have bigger issues to worry about.

Furthermore, larger locations tend to be both better secured and easier to get into. By this I mean that you're much more likely to see alarms or cameras around larger locations, but it's harder to physically secure those locations. Its easy to nail some boards over the windows of an abandoned shopfront and seal it completely. It's much harder to render hundreds of yards of perimeter fence and dozens of doors and windows completely impassable to a determined explorer.

Lastly, it's easier to blend into the crowd in larger cities. Stealth tends to take on a different aspect. In rural areas, stealth can often mean "not being seen at all," while in urban areas stealth often means "look like you belong" and hiding in plain sight. Not always, but usually you can find a few moments where nobody's looking at you to access a PoE, and even if they are your average citizen doesn't care enough to do anything if you look like you're supposed to be there.

Check these out. If you follow even just a handful of the suggestions in the threads below, you'll find more locations than you'll know what to do with.

(This first link is by far the best index of relevant posts about this and almost every other topic on this forum):

There have been additional posts more recently (the above index was created in 2015), that I have found very informative and useful:

I like this one too:

BTW, if you utilize the search tab on the left you'll probably find a dozen more threads with equally valuable data scattered all over this site.
