Breaking Dredges and Losing Trucks
entry by Freak

The weekend was a frenzy of UE for me and some friends. Winter is fast approaching and we wanted to get out and do something instead of sitting around playing Battlefield like we will the rest of the semester.

The first thing we explored was an old dredge, where I learned that old gears that still turn can connect to interesting things, and when said gears start spinning up to lightspeed and smoking, something is seriously wrong. http://www.uer.ca/forum_showthread.asp?fid=1&threadid=12955

After almost breaking the dredge we found an ancient steel-plate boat that someone had dragged out of the woods and launched in the dredge pond (I'd seen it in the bushes last time I was at this dredge). There were no oars, but there were some boards in it, so we all hopped in and started paddling around. I found a couple sticks and a roll of masking tape in the bilge, so I made a pirate sword. There was much shivering of timbers and keelhauling, then we returned the boat to where we found it and went to look for more mines. We found one mine that was on my GPS map, but it turned out to be two collapsed shafts and a pile of rusty metal. Then we drove down a road no one had heard of before, finding connections to other wierd side roads and a bumpy trail that claimed to go to Circle (another town 100 miles north). The honda civic didn't like the road too much, but some hikers we met told us about a mine nearby, which we never did find.

The next day we went out with The Gunslinger's redneckmobile (completely ghetto jacked-up pickup with various bits falling off) to do some offroading and see where the dirt roads went. I researched a little and found there might be 1 to 3 dredges nearby, so I downloaded more maps onto my GPS. We found one mine and explored the buildings, then went in a circle on some bad roads past lots of burned forest and tried to get the truck stuck. We found the road to the dredges gated off, so we headed up a side road that eventually turned into fire trails. We followed these towards the mine area, using GPS and driving over lots of terrible humps and berms that the fire crews had thrown up. As we headed down a 30 degree slope I asked G if his truck could make it back up, which he said it could. When we reached the bottom (after encountering more shitty road), we found a muddy swamp and turned around. We failed to get up the hill, rammed various dirt hills and trees, got stuck several times, got help from some hunters on ATVs who couldn't do much for us, and then turned around and got stuc k in the swamp. We were able to get a ride back to town with a hunter, but G's truck is still sitting in the mud hole in the middle of absolutely nowhere. Hopefully he'll find someone with a big winch and 4wd (his 4wd is broken).
