Children of the night are creepy and big...

I was driving through rural Oregon last summer when I got two flat tires (which really sucked, but that's another story). I was stranded for the night, talking to some of the locals when they explained to me why their little two lane highway was stained red and it was because of these things. This was the first time I had ever heard of Mormon crickets. They had a horrible plague of them that year and they said that the highways were all stained blood red from the swarms that continuously got run over by passing cars. They even had to shut down the highway a couple times that season because the roads were so slick from bug guts they were causing people to wreck.

Kissing bugs you say?
The one critter I fear or rather the chagas parasite they carry.
Seen over a dozen of them so far in Texas.
They are blood drinking parasites of warm blooded animals including man.

This is an assassin or wheel bug. These are harmless and beneficial.
The kissing bug looks almost identical except it doesn't have the wheel thing on it's back. Both can fly.
Had dozens of assassin bugs in my thai pepper garden for years. Great bug killers.

Here's a recent article I saw about these bugs...

https://amp.newsob.../news/state/south-
carolina/article229655714.html

To clarify (why I'm editing) I meant the kissing bug; not the assassin bug.

Yeah don't kill assassin bugs; they're cool, beneficial and harmless.

The vile blood sucking kissing bugs are in Delaware now.
Not good.

Nope, not at all...along with their potential to spread disease, the cutsey name and general creepiness denies their right to live.
Assassin bug? Awesome name, and like you said; beneficial and harmless. Not sure I've ever seen either in real life...

Assassin bugs are pretty low key. Unless you look for them you may not notice them.
You find them were there are melon bugs ie like where are cantaloupes and honey dew growing.
They seem to wuv these pests.

Remember in the kissing bugs the parasites are in their GI tract. Do not get it on your skin, nose, eyes or mouth or leave the smashed kissing bug behind for others. Disinfect with straight bleach.

“... When I was 6 I stepped in a yellow jackets nest. Apparently I was covered from head to toe in em but that's what adrenaline is for. I didn't feel a thing but I was very sore afterwards. They called an ambulance and checked me out and i guess I was ok ...”

This happened to me when I was seven, except I almost died. Now I’m terrified of those little fuckers.

Ive been chased out of two locations by Africanized bees, Very very aggressive bees. Fortunately I only got half a dozen stings and they don't hurt me that much got a couple in the scalp. Just scrape the stiner off with a knife or a credit card, couple drops of ammonia or Stingezetm good to go.

Several people have died from killer bee swarms but they seem to have been abated due to inter-breeding with native honey bees that have taken some of the African traits out of them.

Yellow jackets are some the most stupid in the wasp family. I've destroyed a couple of their nests getting stung once or not at all. However if you don't spot them and they land on you, you'll get stung. Even a lone one flying by will occasionally attack with no provocation.
Being wasps they can sting repeatedly without dying. My first bee sting happen as yours did when I was 6 yo.
These are trash insects that contribute very little if any useful function. I hate them.

Best thing to do is run!
Swatting at even half a dozen of them with a wet towel is ineffective. I've done that.
They are extremely aggressive. Much worse than wasps or any native bee.
Getting too near a nectar or water source and especially their hive can trigger an attack.
Any movement or even a loud noise near the hive can trigger them.
They're edgy, mean tempered critters.
Their alpha scouts and guard bees are even more aggressive.

If near a hive you could have hundreds of individuals attacking you in under a minute.
There max airspeed is like all bees, a mere 16 mph; you can out run them.
And get out of their line of sight.

Hahaha, at my age I cant get it up over 15mph so I reckon Im a goner...

Last time I had to run from African bees was about 12yrs ago and they kept up tagging me as I ran through brush and over auto parts and junk. No, I did not eat my Wheaties that day!

Yeah they don't stop.
Best to recognize and destroy them ASAP.
Their behavior is the only telltale sign.
They are incapable with humans... almost anything can set them off.

High top lace up boots are better; if you over turn your ankle, you're fucked.
Speed lost in boots is neglectable.
Low tops also don't protect your foot and ankles from snake strikes in the event you step on one.

Steel toes will collapse if you drop enough weight on them and the results are sometimes worse than without them.

I have a very different relationship with snakes. I enjoy going to abandoned barns searching for snakes/lizards/salamanders. Here in California, there are very few actually dangerous critters. Avoid the rattlesnakes and don't eat the salamanders and you're good. It's a fun bonus to UE.

Still gotta watch out for black widows though.

Beautiful ensatina at an abandoned barn yesterday:

Just a baby envenomation
https://www.foxnew...esnake-bite-finger

Guh, that's awful! I'm not sure if it's a fact, or just a commonly believed myth, but I've always heard that baby snake bites can be much more harmful/fatal than a bite from an adult snake because the little ones haven't learned to control their venom output; and therefore just pump it all out each time...
Anyone know if this is true? (I'd assume this has been covered here somewhere, or I could scav through Google's BS and *maybe happen on a legitimate answer, but it's the workweek and I'm feeling lazy...😉)

With the babies it's all or nothing.
He was just trying to dry bite him, oops
Because of their size though babies don't have near the venom capacity of adult.
