Got this big fellow last week One shot from a .22 smoothbore and CCI shot shell at about 4ft away.

Stretched out he would go 40 inches, 9 rattles and a button.

No I was not at a bando with my crew, no I was not parked in front, no I wasn't even urbexing! This critter was in my front yard. Watch where you step. Normally I don't shoot them but if they come in my yard around my house its open season!

Say hello to my new little friend...

Notice the telltale widow webbing on the bottom of the shop overhead garage door.
Was careful to keep my fingers out of her web.
Finally late at night I saw her.
She's a pretty Sheila

In British Columbia there are a number of different threats to health depending on where you're exploring. Most critters leave you alone if you give them a wide berth and aren't disturbing foliage/their nests if they're ground dwelling.

Here are some interesting links about critter behaviors/safety:

Snakes in BC

>Rattlesnakes

Spiders:

> Brown recluse

>Black widow

Bats

Bears
https://www.bcmag....cies-call-bc-home/
http://www.env.gov...xplore/misc/bears/
>How you're supposed to react (defensive or aggressive) depends on the type of bear. Also, bear spray can be really hard to get a hold of without permits and should be used as a last resort. Better to just try to avoid bears

Raccoons (see these guys in old houses or adjacent structures in urban areas a lot)
https://wildsafebc.com/raccoon/

Could encounter if hiking into a location:

Bears

Coyote

Cougar

After having a couple of interactions with our local animal control officers I had to look up rabies. We had a neighbor that had their dogs placed under quarantine. Turns out another neighbor had a horse that died from rabies, uncertain how maybe a bat bite of just eating grass with skunk saliva on it.

Turns out the number one carrier in Texas are bats. Second are skunks. Don't mess with them or mess with them up they don't have to bite you just slobbering on you can infect you.

Yeap.
The horse was probably bit or scratched by an infected bat.
Even in humans the wound can pass undetected.
In Midland/Odessa Texas areas rabies is rarely found probably because of the climate; only one bat tested positive in the last 20 years here if I remember correctly.
However to the east and south it's much more prevalent with hot beds of it in some areas.

Bats should never touch you; their sonar is that good.
If one does, that alone is considered atypical behavior; a sign of possible rabies.

There was a rabid bat found in Oregon recently. (I think it was in Medford. Idk.) Wildlife officials advised that if you find a bat you think is rabid, to trap it - don't touch it, but put a shirt over it and get it in a box so it can be examined and euthanized if necessary.

And definitely get your pets vaccinated! Rabies and distemper are no joke.

I can vouch for that; several years ago (in KCMO) we had 9 bats end up in my dad's house...I'd been up in my room that night and upon heading downstairs, found them flying around the living room. It was my first confrontation with bats, but realizing that they were actively avoiding flying into me, I carefully collected them one by one in a dip net, put them in a pot, and released them outside. The next day we found out they'd been roosting in the old chimney and had gotten through a gap in the poorly sealed cover. Got some interesting pics that night (and fortunately no rabies).
Only other time I've had a close encounter was while exploring an old hospital...they just flew up and down the hall like I wasn't there. They're interesting creatures, but rather filthy.

I figured I'd add a few of the shots from the night I became "Batman". All bats were unharmed (as I was) and set free on the front porch.

1. This was the only real action shot I got.

I often think that I am very fortunate to live in a place with a limited amount of deadly wildlife. That being said, rattlesnakes, bobcats, and mountain lions are here and very scary.

I've run into the first 2 in the wild and I saw a mountain lion outside a buddy's window but he took off while we were still safely inside his house.

Mountain lions? I saw a bobcat in my mom's backyard that looked about as big as a mountain lion, but unless it escaped from a zoo (that happened by my mom's too), I've never heard of mountain lions in or around DFW. I did get harassed by a pack of coyotes once. And there was a rabid racoon encounter...

I'm just grateful we don't have bears.

Mountain Lion? In the suburbs? Entirely possible.
Judging by it's length and gait pretty sure I had one in the church parking lot in West Chester PA about 15 years ago at 2 AM.
This one didn't linger.
Solitary and somewhat unpredictable apex predators that you almost never see because they avoid humans.

A rabid coon is scary.
Especially if it comes after you
Think a growling rabid coon was the basis for Gremlins.
Glad there's no rabies in W Texas...

We definitely kept our distance from the raccoon. It didn’t bother us or even notice us as far as I could tell. It just stumbled and wandered around the room like it had just hit the tequila a little too hard. It’s one of those things you just know it when you see it when an animal acts like that.

There was a woman in Harrisburg PA that was in her backyard walking through the trees when a rabid coon jumped out of one onto her head/shoulders with no warning.
It scratched and bite her head and neck.
That one at it's worse.
The vaccine took and she survived.
The closer the wounds are the to brain, the more dangerous and greater the vaccine failure rate. It also means you need the vaccine sooner.

Yep. One of my classes this semester was called "Diseases of Wildlife" and I was surprised how easily you can tell "this animal is very sick" just by looking at it for some of the diseases we studied. Diagnosing it is harder of course, but then nobody should take any chances with something as horrific as rabies.

A couple of months ago The Juge and I went camping on Seongmodo Island, South Korea. We checked out a couple of abandoned farm houses and were delighted to find that the inside of the walls were infested with dozens of Japanese hornets. I guess always think twice before leaning up against a wall, You could have a fun surprise waiting for you inside.

If I was bitten by something with any possibility of it being rabid, I’d be running to my nearest ER.

The survival rate for rabies is a big fat zero - as in, it kills 100% of its (unvaccinated) victims.
