So I'm in the process of trying to plan a trip across the US sometime this summer - visit some friends along the way, but really, I want to get out and shoot some new locations and challenge myself. I don't really know a lot of other people into exploring. So I'm curious - how do you all reach out to meet other people, especially when you're traveling to new areas? I like meeting new people, but since secrecy is often a big thing for us, how do you travel and meet other explorers?

Driving from Atlanta to Dallas 6/6 - 6/14, from Dallas to Chicago 6/14 - 6/20, from Chicago to Atlanta 6/20 - 6/29 with many stops in between. If you wanna meet up and shoot, drop me a line.

I usually never meet up with others when I travel. If I'm not friends with someone I'm not going to hit them up to play tour guide. Plus, it's kind of cool driving into a city you've never been to before with no particular direction in mind.

There used to be a thread somewhere on here called "Crash houses for fellow explorers" . But that was when exploring was more of a tight knit community. I doubt anyone is still offering up a place. I would try messaging people from the specific city and see what happens.

I normally always explore solo.
Anyone I've met from UER I got to know over a long period of time...

My brain is so confusing... I tend to be a solitary person who doesn't mind being alone for extended periods. On the other hand, I like to meet new people. I have no issue meeting up with folks for a bit of exploring. All of my experiences have been very positive so far. I've met some great folks, including my partner in crime from England who flew 1/3 of the way around the world for our first adventure. That was like 8 years ago and we still get together twice a year for a couple of weeks of mine exploring. That also opened the door for my travels to England and some amazing exploring there. None of that would have ever happened if we had not each taken the risk of meeting face to face (a blind date so to speak).

Were I in your shoes (that would be uncomfortable with both of us wearing the same pair of shoes), I would publish my list of destinations and the approximate dates. If folks from the forum want to meet up, they can message you privately to arrange a meeting time and place. For me, a neat part of the whole exploring experience is sharing it with other like-minded people.

It's too late to change this, but it would have been beneficial if you would have established yourself on the forum a bit earlier. Most folks are a bit suspicious around here, so a bit more exposure on the forum might have made it easier to meet folks. Stay active on the forum between now and the time you leave on your adventure. It might open some doors.

Have a GREAT trip!!

Dear Abby

I've had almost all positive experiences meeting people from UER. That said, I have had mixed experiences finding people that are actually interested in meeting. I usually explore alone, but through UER and a couple local facebook groups, I've been lucky enough to meet some awesome people that I now trust and explore with often.

I tried starting a forum thread in the region to where I was traveling a few times, but almost no one responded to that here so I usually don't do that anymore. I have had more success meeting UER people via the meet-ups (their frequency largely depends on where you live) and also through direct/private messaging. I've also managed to insert myself into a couple conversations that interested me in the region I was traveling to to sort of break the ice. I try to dedicate some time and participate in those region forums first, however, so I'm not just asking and taking from other people.
I really believe that if you don't come across as looking for handouts, contribute, and are sincere in your efforts, it shows and people will respond to you accordingly.
Another great way to meet people is to reach out to members that you know will be traveling to where you live. You'll find that they will be more than happy to repay the favor if you happen to find yourself in their neck of the woods one day.
Lastly, I mentioned facebook groups. Although I've learned from experience not to be too open in these kinds of groups, I've also found that local groups are often more interested and receptive to what you might be looking for. You might consider checking out some other local communities as well.

Of course, the downside to most of what I've suggested is that it does take a little time, so planning ahead and getting involved is important.

I generally explore solo and the vast majority of my traveling explores have been solo. That said, I’ve dragged reluctant friends along in the past and got them hooked on the hobby. I also went out on a limb and met some people through a fb group a couple years ago and still explore with them. I have met two UER members also and it was a very positive experience; hoping to meet up with one of them very soon actually.

Overall however I like the solitude of being by myself in abandoned buildings.

You could always try the events section of the website and see if any meetups are in your area or close enough to be worth making the voyage to. I'm very new here myself, so I'm not entirely sure how event posting works, but you could potentially find an established individual in your area and get to know them and see if they'd be interested in starting an event in your area with you to find other like minded folks closeby.

The people I've met through meetups have universally been awesome, and they made me feel welcome to this community- that's something you can't see the full extent of via websites; urbex is more than a hobby, it's a tightly knit community, and being a part of that is an amazing thing to experience.

I had the pleasure of meeting up with TroubleSun a month or so ago when she came through the DFW area. We explored a couple Dallas area schools and then explored my very favorite comfort food spot afterwards; Bubba's (their fried chicken is sooooo good!).
I was hoping to be able to show her some better locations, but time was limited and it was a scorcher, so we settled for the two schools and the great food (Dallas isn't exactly Detroit, after all... it takes a little more effort around here).
@TroubleSun, it was great to meet you and I'd love to hear if you ever had the chance to meet up with the other member(s) in Arkansas after we parted ways. I hope your route home was interesting and you found lots of interesting things to explore!

Let me know when you head back this way and I'll try to share some better spots with you next time.

Dee

Hey I'm a pretty new member and I'm also pretty new to urban ex. I have a small community where I live of a few friends and we will all go exploring. But I have never actually met anyone from such a large urban ex community and was wondering if anyone resides in or around Ottawa? Or maybe comes through the area from time to time ?

Thanks!

I find it hard to find people to explore with. Exploring alone can create some high-intensity anxiety while trying to take photos. There is some distrust and reluctance when I message people to explore with.

Yeah that's exactly why I've been having a hard time finding people to go with. Because it seems like it could get sketchy fast.

I would suggest posting something about being interested in meeting other explorers in your local forum:

You might want to double check this is the right forum. I'm just a southern American that has never been to your region making an educated guess based on my questionable knowledge of geography.

Your post will be seen by a lot more people that are located in your area and you'll be more likely to get a helpful response if you start a thread there.

So this is a common problem with explorers who are new to the UER forum.

Dee Ashley provided some really good advice about posting in your local forum. People in the UE community tend to be pretty cautious about who they share their locations with, and by extension, who they are willing to explore with.

So the biggest question becomes, "How do I establish my credibility in the UE community?" It's not that difficult, but it does take some time, perseverance, and a bit of effort.

Here are my recommendations:

- Regularly participate in UE forum threads, and especially those about your local area. Don't just chip in with a "Nice Explore", but actually discuss what you like about the site. Maybe what concerns you if you were to visit the site. Tell the original poster which are your favorite photo, and why.

- Take pictures when you go out on your own explores. Then post those photos along with a bit of a story about your adventure. Don't worry about whether you think the explore was lame, post the photos. Let's say for a second there's a site you want to explore, but aren't quite up to the challenge yet. Go take a few pictures of the outside of the site, post those pics, and talk about your concerns about attempting the explore.

- Don't take people's reactions personally! There are jerks in every community that will try to bust your chops. Let it go and don't take the bait. This one is especially difficult for me.

- Be patient! Gaining people's trust is a slow process. Consistent participation in the forum will pay off.

- If you are REALLY motivated, organize a local 'meet and greet'. Pick a safe place like Starbucks or a local restaurant. That way everyone gets to meet face to face, but without the expectation of exploring with people they don't know. In business they call this 'networking'.

- It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway. Don't be a jerk. There's no quicker way to become a UE outcast than copping an attitude. I've watched more than a few members destroy their credibility by being an a**hole. People have long memories...

Ooh, I wasn't looking for people to give me their locations haha, more just seeing if anyone would want to meet up and talk or come along with me and some people to MY locations. I completely understand the distrust and I haven't made a name for myself so I would never expect someone to share their spots with me.
