^^ tell the story!!

if insist... Home Depot has trucks you can rent to get your shit home when it won't fit in that swanky SUV you have. They are rent first-come-first-serve... you cannot reserve them (at least in 2005- things may have changed since).

Anyways, I was working in the small equipment rental part of the store due to my mechanical background and experience with small power equipment and this guy came in to rent a truck to get his stuff home. He was a very unpleasant little guy, almost a cliche with a nasty New Jersey accent. He was irate i had to no trucks left to rent... He was literally screaming at me and stared poking me in the chest while the manager stood there and and did nothing to intervene.

By the third poke, I had had enough and told him that if he touched me one more time I was going beat his ass all over the store and leave him bleeding in an aisle. He stopped, did the blink or two and asked me what I said. It was my turn to start screaming and repeated what I told him. And then i looked at the manager, "fuck you, i quit." and I looked back and Mr. New Jersey and told him i would be waiting in the parking lot to beat his punk ass. Then commenced to throw that dorky apron at the manage and out the door I went. I sat on the hood of my car for about 30 minutes waiting for Mr. New Jersey to come outside.

he never did and I never went back.
they mailed me my last check.

the thing about the whole thing is that I am an incredibly patient guy in person, but when you start touching me (especially for what I was making an hour) that is really stepping over a line for me. Anyways, it made me never want to work retail again. (I worked at an auto parts store later on, but that was a joy compared to my home despot experience).

Anyways, you asked, RescueMe... you asked.

Well, I've officially upgraded from "student" to "unemployed with a degree" so I've started driving delivery for Doordash and such to make some money while I search for actual professional jobs.

Unfortunately, environmental science jobs are often through the government, and thus their availability tends to be tied to how the administration in power feels about conservation. Given the current presidential administration, that means jobs are scarce. My cousin is in the same field as I am and he's been looking for work for nearly nine months now with no luck, and he's in a state that prioritizes conservation much more than my own does so I may be looking for a while.

Oh well. At least delivery jobs give me flexibility to do more exploring, so silver linings I guess.

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.

I used to do low-level, real-time and embedded software development. Went to uni to study electrical engineering in my older brother's footsteps cuz I was into electronics as a kid, and didn't really know what I wanted to do with myself at that age. Kind of a default maneuver as I had to do *something* once CEGEP was over.

They introduced digital logic in the program pretty early and I was smitten. Thought I'd make myself into a hardware designer for a few years, as microprocessors and personal computers and all that were all the rage back in the early 80s.

Then I burned out, stretched a four-month work term in TO with Ontario Hydro into a year-long gig, and came back to Montreal out of loneliness. Databases of recloser stats and whatnot were kinda boring. Eventually I went back to uni to finish the last year. As a total loner, as all my classmates had all moved on.

That was when I really saw the light. In my spare time I had designed an 8080-based system on a wire-wrap board. Wound up kinda frustrated that it didn't do much of anything without software, and I didn't have any particular app in mind.

One of the electives in year 4 was Software Engineering (or something; the school now has a full faculty named that). The main project for the course was to write a bare bones 68000-based real-time OS in assembler. In teams of four. Mega-nerd loner me, decided to undertake the project on my own. Got something like 110% on it too.

As a stupid aside, I missed the final exam for that course, cuz I thought it was scheduled for the PM when it was actually in the AM. Dumb shit like that happens when you don't talk to your classmates. The professor took pity on me and gave me a 51 for the course, even though I didn't write the final. Thank you, Rudy, wherever you are.

On my (second) return to Montreal, I lucked out big-time. SPAR aerospace had just folded, and one of their employees was entrepreneurial and picked up a bunch of their assets for a song. He got about 6 of his PhD physicist colleagues to jump ship with him to form his new company. The business plan was basically "R & D for hire". None of the founders knew anything about software, so they hired a guy to run the software department, but he was married to the daughter of one of the founder physicists, and basically inept. So enter me: instant software rock star.

I worked there for over ten years. I will never work for a large company again. It's just too much fun when you have complete control over every little thing, from the grand plan to the last line of code. I worked on so much cool shit over the years at that place. Laser interferometers, optical amplifiers, radiometers pasted on the bellies of planes to study Arctic sea ice, force-feedback haptic hand-controllers, early-ass facial recognition stuff, some crazy-ass doodad to study the development of primitive aquatic life forms that actually flew on the Space Shuttle. The list goes on and on.

In the end, the company turned toward telecom during the boom and I was doing control software for SDH / PDH racks packed with TI DSP-based boards with 11 layers of interconnect and a pound of silicon pasted on each side, some of those chips with a manual an inch-thick each.

It was glorious in those days. I would've worked for free I was having so much fun. But then the bust hit. I rode it out for another year or two developing a tuneable optical filter for a four-man startup. But I had to draw the line when the funding for that ran out and the boss asked me to work for free.

The last twenty years or so I've been making do with odd jobs. On the social assistance the last three years or so. I find no shame in that; I've paid in my share and more over the years. I'm fine with collecting the payout.

These days my full-time job is taking apart my late brother's life. He passed away last November. I've got a half-million dollar house to fixup and sell, a butt-tonne of quality furniture to put on craigslist / kajiji, and another huge pile of extraneous shit to deal with. My kid brother is "inutile au bout", and my 84-year mom has delusions of moving from her single-storey condo into her favourite first-born son's three-storey townhouse.

I sorta feel like killing myself these days, but I'm hoping i'lll be able to put this mess of shit behind me over the next few months. Once that's done I'd like to return to playing with electonics with the big-ass city LED sign I made off with in the winter. And maybe start a business developing apps for viewing / navigating 3D terrain for touristic spots like Whistler / Blackcomb, Mount Royal, Acadia National Park, etc.

I recently became unemployed after quitting my job at Home Depot!

My story is nowhere near as climactic as Samurai's. First of all, for Spring term I had only been working one day a week, and asked for my hours to be cut back to after closing (6pm at the time) when customers started being regularly extra. My disengagement started there, spurred by heightened collective anxiety during the pandemic.

I'd worked retail for 12 years and never gotten into it with a customer until March this year, but this one turd I had the displeasure of serving ended the record. I told him to stay 6 feet back and he started mumbling about "scare tactics bullshit" and slamming shit around. That day, I was already on edge because I felt like I had been put in charge of making sure my customers complied with social distancing, which I was not excited about; I'm not of the "enforcer" personality type. So instead of ignoring his aggression, I responded to his slamming shit by slamming shit, and he called me a bitch. I told him, "just doing what you are, sir", and he proceeded to cuss more. So, I gave him his change by throwing it in his face. Then I walked out of the store after making an angry scream noise. Apparently after I left, he flipped a table. Then he broke through the doors that were closed (to control the direction of customer traffic) and came outside to tell me I was a cunt and that I should find a different job because my customer service sucks. I really fucking agreed with him about finding a different job, but I wasn't about to quit on bad terms. I flipped him off, walked to the entrance, and told my coworker who was counting customers at that door to "tell my fucking manager I'm taking a fucking break."

I went straight to my store manager to rat on myself in tears, by then feeling totally awful for my behavior, regardless of how justified it was. I mean, the guy was a dick, but normally, I'd be able to get over it. Maybe his job/income had been really affected by the pandemic and he was feeling resentful and took it out on me. Maybe he's normally an okay dude. I don't know. Anyway, my boss was really nice and super understanding about it, and I went to night shifts for a few weeks, but then we increased our store hours, so I took a leave of absence and used hazard pay.

The thing is, I've actually hated my job for a long time, and not just because of the customers. I worked in a high-theft store where a lot of people get arrested daily, and that just never sat right with me, especially with how mean loss prevention ("asset protection") was to boosters/shoplifters. I stood there all day kissing ass real nice and those fucks got to sneak around talking shit to people who were trying to make a living by ripping us off. Home Depot is a corporate entity that will NEVER have my sympathy when they get robbed. I'm not going to engage in debate, but I think that strung-out addicts and houseless folks need a lot gentler attention than they get, even in situations where they've committed crimes.

Also, I fucking do not like cops. I'm not debating blue lives here either.

On Juneteenth, I quit my job. I was still on leave so I didn't need to give notice. I don't plan on finding another job soon. My partner makes enough money to support both of us. I'll apply for scholarships in October and cross my fingers that this was my last retail gig, at least corporate.

As for a career, I'm working on a Biology degree and I'd like to either work for Fish & Wildlife (government environmental science) or something like the Audubon Society (nonprofit environmental science). I'm really interested in research, restoration, and conservation.

One of the dudes in Tool Rental at my store quit by cake while I was there! It was amazing. He had a whole rant on there about why he was leaving. People were offended but also ate the cake. I kind of just internally applauded because I don't know him, or eat sweets.

Fucking dude got rehired before after getting fired for leaving the store during his shift. (He left to stop a kidnapping in the parking lot. Cops were late to that one, go figure!)

While being off of work for nearly two months due to covid, I kept super busy repairing classic VWs in my shop at home. Went back to my workplace of nearly ten years, worked for a couple of days, thought "why the fuck am I making someone else rich doing the same thing here?" and quit. My morning commute is now about 35 seconds, I don't have to work on any shitty dune buggies built by a drunk, blind guy in a shed, no more warranty work on problem plagued diesels, and best of all the pay increase is about 300%.

Well yeah, debate is not my thing. It makes me feel miserable, so I don't do it. I actually had you in mind when I wrote that. You might not read this either, and that's okay. You can ignore me or dislike me, it's all good. There is no beef on my end.

I'm student Civil Engineering still in University. I do have a 2 year degree to work as a technician. But I want to build towards something bigger.

And I think working as a Civil Engineer will expose me to more Urbex locations I hope.
I'm almost 26 and I still don't have a full blown Bachelors degree. That's embarrassing for myself considering i had a lot of goals in mind 🤦
But better later than never I guess

Hey man, everyone takes their own road. I'm in a similar boat - mid 20s in a few months, in college for 6 years, etc. I only just graduated. Not the original plan, but circumstances.

There were a fair amount of students in my program in their 30s getting their bachelor's degree, so I wouldn't really worry about it.

I used to be a school bus driver for a high school

Hey me too. Lasted a month before I decided it wasn't a good idea to try to continue.

My schedule was as follows:

10:30p: Leave for work at the airport.
11:00p: Arrive at the airport. Begin work.
4:00a: Leave work. Head to bus lot.
4:40a: Arrive at bus lot. Sleep for 20 minutes.
5:00a: Begin work. Pre-trip vans and wait for a route to come up.
9:00a: End route (if applicable). Sleep in car or try to do errands or whatever.
1:00p: Wait for an afternoon route.
5:00p: End route (if applicable). Go home.
6:00p: Arrive at home. Sleep.
10:30p: Leave for work at the airport...etc.

I'm 29 and I'm still working on my BS. I didn't know what I wanted to do until I was 26. I don't understand how anyone knows what they want to do at 18, but good for them I guess.

Yeah that was another factor I had to consider. I originally was doing Chemistry. Switched to Biology a semester after. Then switched to IT, then computer Engineering, and now, finally, I've found a very big interest in Civil Engineering and now I'll stick to it.

It's a long process. But I definitely don't want to regret doing something that I find very dull for the rest of my life. There's already enough madness in the world haha

Thank you for the encouragement! I think part of me fears that I won't get a BS till late 30s although that's impossible considering I got 2 years left.
But it's still that unreasonable subconscious part of my brain that fears that and coming up with weird scenarios to pander the worst :o

I'm currently a Civil Engineer, and I personally think its a great career choice! You'll get there eventually I work on design for upcoming developments and city improvements/infrastructure and it definitely has exposed me to a lot of developing areas/construction.

Oh wow that's awesome! I have to land myself a few interns first to really get in the groove of it haha
I'm more environmental side. But since I'll probably be working on dams and such, it'll be interesting to see what I can find
