When in danger, when in doubt, RUN IN CIRCLES, SCREAM AND SHOUT!

| | | The history --if you know it & interpret (share) it is usually a lot more interesting to me than any artsy effects that could be done anywhere. As someone who lived in & around Detroit for a while, and been on uer for a long time & seen many failed & successful efforts at being artsy, when looking at the photos, I noted the slight attempt at being artsy (in ways that seem a bit tired, though I know if you're going for artsy, you gotta start somewhere...) but was immediately frustrated at the lack of any context regarding the site (purpose, history), and I didn't see any effort to tie the 'art' in with the location. Don't mean to sound rude, I'm just being honest...

| People who say that they don't mean to be rude, and that's exactly what they are doing, under a facade of "just being honest", are just using an excuse to be a deliberate asshole. Over time, images are hard to seem new and exciting, kind of like having sex with the same person over years and years. However, you can make an active effort to be interested, invested, and attracted to a person, to have an active and healthy sex life. This same thing can be used with hobbies that you think are tired and old - you choose to enjoy them in some ways, and to be a dick to others that don't impress you. That being said, there was an obvious attempt of being artsy, not a "slight" one. If you can't even have constructive criticism, then why say anything at all? I didn't give history. On purpose. I was being vague. On purpose. If I'm more specific, it brings attention, and in this hobby, I try to avoid it. If I gave any kind of history, like what they were used for, how large or long they were, etc, it would be too obvious. I've been an explorer for a long time too, much longer than my status on this site I only just recently getting into photography. I literally started last September. I just wanted constructive criticism, and you had to be "honest" - a.k.a. an asshole. Maybe instead of telling me that you didn't like I did a thing, try giving me advice on how to do that - like tying the "art" in with the location. You want context on the site so you can give me better criticism and advice? Maybe just PM so I don't blast a location on the main forum. There are many things you could've constructively said to someone that is new to photography but old to exploring. But nope. You just had to "be honest". Go fuck yourself.

| | | Posted by CaptOrbit You seem like you're taking it a bit hard. The way I see it is at that point you basically have two choices you can either dismiss their opinion which is fine, or you can ask yourself if there really is room for improvement in your work somewhere and use it as a chance for self-reflection which is also fine. From here it can just drag down into an argument over what exactly is good art or a good photograph, which has been done a thousand times on this board alone. So I guess my advice would be is to ask yourself how much does my expression that I show through my art mean to me versus how much do the opinions of others mean to me as an indicator of the value of my photography?
| I wasn't taking it hard. There was no advice, which is what I wanted. I know I have room for improvement, I am obviously new to photography. My frustration was the whole "not trying to be rude, just being honest" thing, and then not even offering some sort of way for me to improve, just being a dick. My response was not one of "I can't take criticism", it was "If you're going to tell me you don't like it, tell me how I can improve, don't be an unnecessary dick about it and then offer me nothing to get better".

| HOLY SHIT. I've met Hoolie and he isn't the sort to be deliberately rude or an asshole to somebody. And he wasn't being a dick to you. You asked for opinions, and he gave you his. He didn't have a particularly positive reaction to your photos, and stated it honestly. And I have to agree with him. There is no information regarding the location, no context or history to the tunnels being shown. When going on the Great Lakes forum, with an interest in these locations, it's nice to have some information on just what it is we are looking at. The photos shown have no context, no information, and could have been taken anywhere. That's not to say you have to give away the location or "blow up the spot". That would be really awful. What little can be seen in the photos appears to be an interesting location, and it should be protected by not giving away too many details. But again, without even a story to go with it, it's just free of context and less interesting to those of us who care more for that sort of thing than artsy photos. My best compliment on your photos is that you have excellent focus and depth of field. That can be a challenge with long-exposure photography. I won't comment on the obvious "artsy" effects or composition. I've seen it all a million times and it gets old. Hoolie took that into account in his criticism, by admitting that you have to start somewhere. And hey - at least there's not photos of spinning a ball of burning steel wool here. Thank you for sparing us from another one of those. If you don't want to discuss the location itself - if all you want is critique of your photo techniques, with a desire to improve - there is a photography forum here on UER where you will probably gain more useful feedback to these photos. Otherwise, feel free to take your own advice and go fuck yourself.

| | | Posted by JennyUE Mmkay this thread has devolved into pointless arguments with anonymous people on the internet, so I'm bowing out. I stand by what I said even though my attitude got the better of me. I didn't want drama but that's obviously what I got, so, peace out. O/
| Congratulations on imploding your own thread. -You- axed to be critiqued. You then got offended, fed the flames, and got a small inferno of wuv for your efforts... which was amusing to watch. ●Post or link pics so they show directly on the thread. ●Site info is not mandatory or even desirable at times; no foul there. However trash pics better have documentary value though, some site history helps a lot in that case. ●Control the heat. #1 & #3 are throw aways. #2 is a keeper... in my opinion.
